Combine a little Dream Theater with a lot of Iron Maiden and you are pretty close to discribing Tempting Tragedy. The band claims that "... the band has managed to create a sound that defies categorization and direct influential pinpoint". I think almost every band feels that they are self-defined for one reason or another. Maybe no band wants to be compared to another because that would make it appear as if they were not original by design. That being said, I really liked this group. They are quality musicians and have a marvelous recording with which to prove their collective talents.

Vocalist and rhythm guitarist Marty Surette has a unique enough voice that the band could easliy be recognized once he starts singing. His voice is perfect for Alternative Rock but a bit weaker when converted to Metal. I can't say that I have ever heard any signer that sounded like him so maybe Marty defies categorization.

Three things that I would suggest to take this band from good to amazing.
I hate to do this kind of stuff to bands but this group is so close to being amazing that I have to give my suggestions on what it would take. so here we go.

  •  Bring in a Lead Singer. Someone that has a real vocal range. I'm not knocking Marty, this band could be over the top with two quality vocalists and a front man would allow the band to play their instruments and let the singer work the crowd.
Case and Point: watch this YouTube video of the band live. Tempting Tragedy - Symmetry The band has no visual appeal. A lead singer armed with a mic and a vocal range could give this band a new diminsion visually and on record.

  •  Drummer Steven Basque, needs to have a double bass sit up. You can't play Progressive Metal without a double bass. It's just quality Alternative Rock with a single bass set up.

  •  Give keyboardist Denis Guitard more room. He seems so barried in the mix. Let the guy out! Listen to some Deep Purple or Uriah Heap for inspiration.

  • In the Studio
Recorded and Mixed at Pumpk'n Patch Studio (no I did not spell this wrong) by Danny Bourgeois and Mastered by Mike Bourgeois. I could find nothing wrong with the mix. The instruments had intensity and the sound stage was deep and wide. Marty's multi-tracked vocals are well defined and cuts through the mix very well which is not easy to do with Metal Band (or non categorized bands as well).
    Conclussion
Although I bashed them a bit for saying that Tempting Tragedy "defies categorization" I hope the band has some good Canadian humor about them. They combine Progressive Metal and Alternative Rock together seamlessly. This is a band on the edge of something amazing. Follow my suggestions and the next release will be off the chain!
