CD title - Train of Life
by Steve Warner and the Rolling Coyotes
Reviewed by Charlie Harrelson
The train of life rolls for all of us. It can take us down a myriad of tracks to various depots.
This album represents various stages and settings for life's journey. The musical motifs include traditional and pop folk, swing, country and bluegrass.
The above statement was from the bands page at CD Baby and really sums up the CD in a couple sentences.
Combining folk, pop, country and bluegrass Steve Warner and the Coyotes give you nothing short of your monies worth. Clocking in
at 17 songs I don't think they could have fit another song on the CD. The liner notes said that "there is a lot of songs here, but why hold back."
The band consisted of four main players Steve Warner (vocals, ukulele, harmonica, guitar), Nancy Lynn (vocals), Andy Mosholder (fretless bass) and
Elliot Simon (piano, accordion and additional vocals).
Five quest musicians include Tom Proutt (guitars), Sam Stilwell (percussions), Jeep Rosenberg (Lead Guitar), Chuck Haskins (fiddle, mandolin), and Jeff Rezin (mandolin).
All the musicians picked for this session are first class players and the CD is rich with song and stories about life's endless travels.
Steve's voice is unique yet when you hear him you would say you've heard this guy somewhere before. I have listened to the CD a number of times
and just could not put my finger on who Steve reminds me of until I went to CD Baby. Under artists this group sounds like was the name Willie Nelson.
That was it! Now it all comes together for me. Willie always surrounded himself with the best players he could find and always sang to his strengths.
Steve has done the same thing. His vocal range is not huge but he knows where it is and plays to that range. Having Nancy Lynn as a vocalist also helps compliment Steve's limited vocal range. The two work together extremely well.
A dissapointing note was posted in the liner notes saying "Given the prospects of selling CDs these days, it didn't make much sense to concern myself with a follow-up release." If that is true then Steve needs to fire himself as the bands booking agent and hire a promotor and management. This band
of talented musicians should be playing and selling CD's full time. Great musicians and song writers CAN sell CDs in todays market.
I have a section on the website called EVOR-Pedia - musicians tips and it is dedicated to selling and promoting independent music and being successful doing it. I suggest Steve grabs a cup of coffee and spends some time in this section of the website.
The bands style of music is taylor made for the CD generation. Plus, the songs can be purchased as MP3's from CD Baby allowing even the new generation of music lovers to enjoy this band on their MP3 player. Fortunatly, the liner notes continued with a more positive "Yet, I'm sure that's inevitable" leaving me to believe that the band will be back to record more material in the future. One thing I can say about CD sales. I am a partner dealer for CD Baby and CD Universe via the websites Virtual Kiosk and both companies sell CDs as well as MP3 downloads. I sell CDs at a rate of better then 10 to 1 to MP3 downloads so the CD is not dead yet.
In the Studio:
Recorded at Creative Age Studio in Martinsburg, WV was all the liner notes mentioned. I can not give credit to any engineering, mixing or mastering
but they did a marvelous job. Instruments had great depth, detail and clarity while the vocals cut through the mix perfectly. This CD was a well oiled machine in the studio.
Conclusion:
This band was first rate and the songs are all well written stories about the road of life and how we travel down it.
Even a cover of a Ray Davies (The Kinks) 'Sunny Afternoon' tune to put a smile on your face. If I had 6 stars I would give all 6 to this CD but I only have 5 so the CD gets 5 stars and I hope to hear more from the band in the future.
