Malenky Slovos, just the band name is different enough to make you look twice. The best I could come up with was a post on a music
forum that says the name came from Stanley Kobrick's Clockwork Orange, a derranged cult film classic from the middle 70's. All I can remember about that movie was the gang leader wearing a rubber penis during a rape scene. The movie was dark and disturbing for
it's time so my thinking was that this CD would be a little disturbed as well. To my surprise, the CD was very listenable. In fact, it was quite pleasing to my ear.
Combining a bit of Pink Floyd meets U2 with some amazing interplay between guitarists. As mentioned before the EP was not what I had expected but the overall experience was music that was extremly visual. I did not spend a long time reading the liner notes to read the words from each song but I gathered that much of the lyrical content was Andrea "Logan" Imberciadori inner personal story.
Matteo Figoli has a great voice that really does combine elements of Roger Waters and Bono. Reading other reviews his voice was compared to Depeche Mode's Dave Gahan. Although remotely accurate, I never liked Depeche Mode so I'll stick with my comparison.
As a seasoned guitar player of some 30 plus years I was drawn to the duel guitar work of Andrea "Logan" Imberciadori (who also writes the lyrics) and Stefano Toneli who also shares some of the vocal duties. The two guitar players create a landscape of sound that is extremly visual in context. I think a CD from the two guitar players would be mind altering esperience to say the least.
In the Studio:
The whole EP was recorded at Logan's home studio. The CD did not suffer from that home studio sound. It was crystal clear and every instrument was revealing and perfectly placed within the sound stage. Why pay for expensive studio time when you can get this kind of quality at home? I noticed that mixing and mastering was done outside the home studio so let's give some love to Lorenzo Capurro and Diego Petrucci at Sonik Studio (more on them at http://www.myspace.com/thesonikstudio).
Conclusion:
This is the first CD/EP I have reviewed from a band in Italy and I must say that it exceeded my expectations. The band is working on a full length release very soon and if it is anything like this EP we have great things to look forward to from this band.
A big tip of the hat to the bands photographer, Alessandro Corio. His band shots and CD cover design was first class.
