CD title - Stranger on a Damned Staircase
Band - Skeletons in the Piano
Before I begin this review I want to say to the band that I am sorry for taking so long to write this review.
There is a reason and I've been putting it off for too long. So here we go.
If somebody told me that I was going to get a CD from a band that has a singer that sounds like a cross between Ian Gillian (Deep Purple)
and Jim Morrison (The Doors) you would have to belive that the CD would be off the chain. The CD packaging was first rate with a well
designed cover and a CD case that opens up to reveal a band picture, an interesting story, a thanks page and the CD. I was crazy with anticipation
to listen to this work of art. Or so I thought.
Vocally, Elijah Hargrave was everything I expected. His voice was amazing. He captured the deep thoaty sound of the late Jim Morrison
along with the incredible range and style of Ian Gillian. The band as a whole was competent with Eric Donovan's drum work capturing my
attention as he had to hold together some pretty flimsy songs.
I think my real issue with this band was on the song writting end. The CD was a collection of 11 songs that would be of interest
to the Halloween crowd but would be hard pressed to hold anyone's interest past October 31st.
In the studio:
The band was well recorded, especially the vocals. It was great to hear a CD from an alt-rock band that featured clear vocal so you
could actually understand the words. The guitar was a bit dissapointing. Hargrave used a wide range of sounds for his cleaner tones but when he wanted distortion
it seemed like it was the same sound every time. A good engineer in the studio should be able to notice this and make a few suggestions. With so many
effects pedals and amp simulators available I would have loved to have heard wider variety of distorted sounds. After a while the guitar became predictable
to my ear and that is death for me as a listener.
Conclusion:
I think I expected more from this CD then from other offerings that have been sent to me because the guys did such a great job
of packaging themselves. The CD cover was well designed and pretty expensive to produce. I would expect that as this bands level
of talent gets better their level of song writing will improve. They don't have far to go to be good.
They just haven't gotten there yet.
I give them 2 1/2 starts.
