    Song from the band MouseAbout
All songs are from the artist's CD titled MouseAbout.

/ What's in the Air?  / Leave Yourself Behind now  / Opposable Thumbs  / In The End  /

Their official bio from their website reads ( in part ):
“MouseAbout formed in March of 2005 in Austin Texas. Songwriter and guitarist Peter O'Dowd and drummer Shane Kullberg had previously shared the stage in Austin band Murfph. John Cassibry was added on bass and has the best hair of the group. Along the way Sean Friend joined up and added his guitar to the mix. MouseAbout has released one self titled debut. The music is a genre jumping mix of jazz, rock, pop, punk, reggae, and polka.”

What THESE ears heard was a strange brew that I was at first ready to write off without a fair shake. Well this band is the first one I am reviewing after some rather trying personal issues over recent time, and for some reason, this time around, I feel more tolerant.

A good thing too as I would have missed this unique blend (to me anyway) of early Floyd, Doors, and Grateful Dead with an almost ZAPPA sarcasm at times. The band on the epynomous first album O’Dowd, Kullberg, and Cassibry, with guest trumpet by Steven Welch.

Throughout much of their music are sprinkled liberally strange vocal effects, buzzing synths, moody background keys in a muted almost ghostly manner at times. The production is quite good, the vocals are quite good, and the humor is subtle, in a serious way. I know, an oxymoron, but they take their humor seriously. OK, so here are some songs of note.

LA LA LA struck me as the ZAPPA-esque(?) tune lyrically and the sarcasm, intended or not got my attention. The use of some timely vocal effects, some interesting bluesy riffing, and overall cool stuff! There are no virtuosos in this band, but the sound is tight, creative, and fun.

Another standout track is LEAVE YOURSELF BEHIND NOW. I like the acoustic guitar, bass an laidback drum feel with a crossover vocal reminiscent of Waters/Morrison/Lesch. The song is hypnotic, with cool background keys again fleshing out the tune.

OPPOSABLE THUMBS is an insane romp that is over almost before it starts, but has some wild chromatic bizzarro moments. Frantic, weirs and fun. The last track, IN THE END, is banjo laden. However, I have rarely if ever heard a banjo tune with synthesizer splashes, ending in an EXPLOSION (literally!)

CONCLUSION: these and the other songs on the first MOUSEABOUT cd are surprisingly rich in content, and creativity. I suspect the band members will collectively flip me the bird ( all in good fun, I hope! ), for reviewing this too seriously. But I think they will also like what I have to say. You should get it.

Really! No REALLY, I MEAN IT.

    Meet Joel Pirard
I would like to take a few minutes to introduce myself to everyone. My name is Joel Pirard and I am one of the new music reviewers here at Evor. I wanted to let you know a little about my thoughts on music. It's important to let the people that I review, think and listen to music.

I love to listen to great music from Independent artists. I'm very excited about how the indie community has generated such great music. I will say that if I don't like what I hear I will say so. At EvO:R, we are told to tell the truth and not to hold back. So here goes. I hope you enjoy the reviews.
