It's December in Central Florida and the temperature has dipped down into the 30's. I'm driving down I-4 and I popped in "Pretty close to very good by The Matt BUrke Band and the first song is "The Weekend War" a live Jimmy Buffet inspired song that makes you realize that the cold will go away and it's happy hour somewhere.

This CD was the perfect solution for a cold winter day when you are wishing for a warm summer breeze and a cold adult beverage with an umbrella in it. Matt draws musicially from some pretty heavy weight players like Jimmy Buffet and Dave Matthews. He understands how to draw his music from real life experience and when you do this you become a story teller. Matt's music is like reading a good book. You just don't want to put it down.

Normally, I won't review songs individually but I loved "Superstar" as Matt sings about the power and ego of stardom. He writes "I'm so lame, I'm top dog" this is so true about todays music and the people behind it. "Fading Faces" was my favorite song as it tells the story about kids Matt knew when he was young and now wonders where they went. I think we all wonder about a few people that we knew when we where 5-7 years old. What would they be like today and what did life have in store for them?

    In the Studio:
Recorded and engineered at Ultraviolet Lounge Recording Studio in Gle Ellyn, Il with lead guitar work recorded in Daytona Bch. Fl. The instruments were crisp, clean and well placed in the sound stage. Matt's voice was very understandable even thought he lets that Dave Matthews style out of the box from time to time. Nothing was lost in the studio. My hats off to Bob Pucci and the guys at Ultraviolet for recording a great CD and keeping everything simple. The fun vibe came through on every song.

    Conclusion:
Combine a talented singer with well written songs, musicians that know how to play, a studio engineer that knows when to get out of the way of something great and you end up with an amazing CD. This is a true listening experience. I just wish it wasn't so damn cold right now!
