William Garrett
by William Garrett
I have always been a big fan of Thin Lizzy, Robin Trower, Blue Murder
and anything that John Sykes has done. That said, William Garrett has hit that same spot in me. I would be very surprised if Mr. Garrett did not draw some of his influences from the artists I have just mentioned.
The disc opens with a Troweresque bump and grind number called Hard Lovin’ Woman that held my attention, especially because the vocal work is great. He really does remind me of John Sykes. It is then followed by Wicked Lady and I Don’t Need Your Love which are the best tracks on the record. I love the heaviness, and again, the vocal work is top notch.
Mr Garrett is no slouch on the guitar either. His playing is tasty and free sounding. Excellent work overall.
Unfortunately, I was not thrilled over the track Two Ships (That passed in the Night.) The performance was ok but I felt that the vocal on this track was forced. This song (overall) didn’t feel like it fit on this record. It’s just an opinion, of course.
Garrett also covers the classic Kiss tune, Strutter. This for me, though not the highlight of the record, was a special ‘way back’ moment. I was a huge Kiss fan when I was 11 and got my first guitar because of this very same song. So I can relate to Garrett on his possible reasoning for choosing this track.
The next couple of tracks fall short of the strong opening half of the disc. The songs aren’t bad by any means, but the excitement level is low compared to earlier tracks on the record.
William Garret is a great player and great vocalist. You cannot deny him this. There are several great songs on this record and it takes balls to cover a Kiss song. On the down side, I think a second and third set of ears could have made this CD GREAT!! I have found myself falling short on much of my own work because I didn’t get some unattached and unbiased opinions prior to release. Sometimes it is as simple as arranging the songs better on the disc and sometimes it’s a matter of omitting a track. We are biased to our own work. So sometimes it is difficult to make these hard decisions on our own. This is the plight of the independent artist.

Conclusion:
I would recommend William Garret to fans of Thin Lizzy, Robin Trower, Blue Murder and John Sykes. The CD, overall, is good but not great. There are great songs on the disc, though. The production is above average and the performance is high but my interest level went from “WOW!” to very low about half way through the disc. William Garret gets a B+.
