Dan Rivers writes great songs. Nothing fancy about his approach, just a great voice and a lone guitar. On the surface it seems a bit boring
but after a few songs you find yourself settled in and listening to the great stories Dan has put to music.
If I had to compare his voice to anyone that we are familar with I would have to lean towards Gordan Lightfoot
or Neil Diamond. I even heard a taste of Billy Joel without the piano while listening to track #3 'dancing with you" or Cat Stevens (before he became a Jehadist) and started
wishing death to anything not Muslum. So much for 'Peace Train'...
Dan's voice was so easy to listen to as he understands what his vocal range is and he stays comfortably within this area. He did stretch the range a few times on 17 Rickenback Street but so did the Beatles on a number of songs and they got away with it without anyone complaining.
In the Studio:
Recorded at Azalea Studios except 'Dancing With You' which was recorded at
River Country Records. The CD was produced by FETT (ya, that was the name on the CD).
I can't think of a harder thing to do musically then what Dan has pulled off. The whole CD was just
a Dan singing and playing the guitar. No over-dubs, no multi-tracking and no additional instruments.
If you make a mistake you can't hide it in the mix or fix it with Pro Tools. It's 100% pure music.
Not much to do if you are a studio engineer. Just set up the mics properly and control room noise and both studios
are successful at pulling this off. The sound quality was rich and every note was articulated.
Conclusion:
It's hard to reward someone for just playing a guitar and singing but Dan blew me away with his robusk voice and his pristine
guitar playing. This CD gets 2 1/2 stars for each track used in the studio. So for those unfamilar with studio recording the score is 5 stars for using only 2 tracks.
