The Independent Musicians CD Reviews
Welcome to the EvO:R Independent CD Reviews Section.
I would like to take a few minutes to introduce ourselves to everyone. The EvO:R review section
features reviews from various independent musicians that submit material for our consideration.
I wanted to let you know a little
about our review teams collective thoughts on music. It's important to let the people that we review know how we
think of their music and how we listened to their creations.
First of all, we strongly believe that if your music stinks then
the world should know about it! After all, you have the nerve to charge as much for
your stuff as the majors do so it better be pretty damn good. If your material is good, we'll be glad to
tell the world. I We will hold nothing back! That is a promise.

Chron Goblin
by Chron Goblin
Reviewed by Jimmy Dee Caterine
Chron Goblin was formed in early 2009 by guitarist Devin “Darty” Purdy, vocalist Josh Sandulak, and drummer Brett Whittingham with the intention of creating some dynamic and unique rock tunes based in the traditions of early heavy metal and classic rock, yet developed with a distinctly modern and fresh approach. After writing a few songs and trying out numerous bass players, Chron Goblin added Richard Hepp, like the other members, a fellow University of Calgary graduate, to complete their line-up, and they journeyed forth to independently record and publish their 5 song self-titled EP over the winter. With their EP released in early April 2010, Chron Goblin has already earned some significant attention for their excellent live performances, as depicted in an article by Allison Drinnan for the April edition of BeatRoute Magazine.
I can already tell by the live sound of this disc that Chron Goblin probably produces quite an intense live performance.
In listening, I had many flashbacks from my youth, especially, during some of the Black Sabbath like guitar passages. This is definitely beer drinking, smokey bar music. Though, smoking in bars is illegal in most cities now.
I wouldn’t call this CD a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination but it’s something that is worth a few listens.
I was thrown off a few times by the odd grooves. Too many times I asked myself if, drummer, Brett Whittingham meant to do this or if he was just losing the groove. A lot of the vocal work reminds me of Beastie Boys and Primus. So it does have that punk/alternative flavor.
This is basically an EP release with nothing that really hits me in the face but it does have some value.

Conclusion:
Chron Goblin is not horrible and I definitely hear the potential. You can feel the passion and my guess is they perform well in front of an audience. But there is definitely some wood shedding that needs to be done to further hone their craft. As far as recommendations go –Sabbath, and Beastie Boys come to mind, even though they are on two sides of the spectrum. I am not sure that the world is ready for Chron Goblin, yet (or vice versa.)
So for now C- is the best I can give to this EP.
