Welcome to the EvO:R Independent CD Reviews Section.
I would like to take a few minutes to introduce ourselves to everyone. The EvO:R review section features reviews from various independent musicians that submit material for our consideration.

I wanted to let you know a little about our review teams collective thoughts on music. It's important to let the people we review know what we think of their music and how we listened to their creations.

We hold nothing back! The team has been instructed to be honest and respectful of all CD's reviewed.

A number of years ago a very successfull reviewer told me to never get too excited over a CD and to never write how bad a CD is even if you considered it as total garbage. He reminded me that some of the best critics of the 70's era hated bands like Rush calling them "derivate" and thought Led Zepplin was "rubbish" and the music was "barely unlistenable." Led Zepplin was so badly reviewed by the press that the band stopped doing media interviews. Now looking back, we can see just how wrong those critics had been.

Since that piece of advice years ago I have heeded his advice and looked for good in the music I could not stand as well as control my glowing for albums I really liked. This CD will cause me to break the mold (somewhat). Billy Lord's American Music, is one of the best album releases I have listened to in years.

This album has the Robert John "Mutt" Lange effect. Robert Lange produced albums for artists such as AC/DC, Def Leppard, The Boomtown Rats, Foreigner, The Cars, Bryan Adams, Billy Ocean, Savoy Brown, and Nickelback. He also produced songs with Canadian country singer and ex-wife Shania Twain.

Other bands have copied this formula with great results. New country band's like Rascal Flatts, solo artist Kenny Chesney along with alternative rockers Nickleback are all classic examples of the Robert John "Mutt" Lange effect. The key to this success is a good mix of inviting songs, riff driven music, amazing song structure and unmistakable pacing.

American Music has that wonderful pacing that has worked for so many of the current line up of successful modern artists. This CD has no fillers, every song tells a story about life, love and hope. Every songs sounds real and from the heart and the music is pure and honest. The musicianship is world class and Billy Lord's voice takes a back seat to nobody. It is hard to believe this CD comes from an independent artist. It's just way too polished. One listen and you will understand what I am talking about. Maybe my only issue with this CD was I thought Billy was from Texas or Nebraska and I was stunned to read he was from New York. How could anything so heartfelt and comfortable come from someone in such a fast paced city like New York?

    In the Studio:
The studio work is equally as dynamic as the material. Credits on the CD mentioned Lucio Rubino from Fishtank Studios as producer and also gave him some guitar credits. His work behind the scenes was just as impressive as the music itself. This was a first class recording for a first class series of songs.

What really caught my attention on this CD was the guitar work. With todays technologies it is very easy over do the instruments. Many producers feel as if they have so many tracks to fill and as a result we end up with these lush soundscapes and walls of sound. Not the case with this offering. The instrumentation enveloped the message and added emotion, not delay, reverb and chorus.

    Samples from the CD.
Good Riddance  /     Long Road  /     Written in the Stars  /     Fighting Back  /     Self Made  /     Toss One Back (Jack)  /     On a Summer Night  /     Thing Called Love  /     Ascension  /

    Conclusion:
I should have published this review over 3 weeks ago. I just wanted to make sure that this CD was as good as I thought it was after the first couple listens. After waiting a couple weeks I listened again and the CD passed the test of time with flying colors. I can only give this CD the top honors it so richly earned.

    10 stars out of 10.......
