     The Areola Treat EP
    by The Areola Treat

This record was not what I expected. I’ve been looking at the cover for 6 months with its cowboy boot stepping on a guitar pedal, thinking it was going to be another regurgitated blues guitar record. So it got thrown to the bottom of my pile because I’ve, quite frankly, heard enough bad guitar blues records to last me two life times.

Though, still not something I would listen to on a regular basis, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that The Areola Treat is a punk band from Malta. Woo Hoo!! And a very good punk band to boot (no pun intended as I refer back to the CD cover.) X-Ray Specs come to mind while listening to this record. I also hear traces of Jane’s Addiction in the mix.

The group consists of Lisa Micallef Grimaud, Adrian Mizzi, Chris Busuttil, and matthew cuschieri (who is no longer with the group.) Unfortunately, I don’t know who plays what because of a lack of information. It’s obvious that Lisa Micallef Grimaud is the vocalist, though.

The production of this record is great for a punk record. It’s just raw enough to still be called punk (unlike Green Day.) With Chrissie Hynde like vocals and guitar lines reminiscent of The Edge along with a driving rhythm section, The Areola Treat grabs the listener with some familiar sounds but the combination creates a sound all their own. This is a great debut EP from a great punk band. I wish I had more information but even their latest effort, Pleasure Machine, lacks sufficient liner notes to get to know the band.

So that said, if you like punk rock in the vein of X-Ray Specs or possibly the more pop, Missing Persons, you will enjoy The Areola Treat. I like the record and this is yet another record that will make it into my personal collection today.
    Conclusion:
The record probably deserves an A considering its genre and its execution but an A- is the best I can do. Unknown bands really need to add thorough liner notes to their CD’s so that their audience can get to know them. I am getting way too many discs where bands want to be heard but send the message that they are no one.

IF YOU ARE NO ONE, HOW CAN ANYONE HEAR YOU!!!

    Jimmy Caterine...EvO:R Reviewer.

About the reviewer- Jimmy Caterine has numerous album credits to his name. He is most noted as founder, guitarist and co-writer for 80’s metal quartet, Sacred Rite (Capitol Records.) He has worked with top name professionals in the industry. This would include Grammy Award winning producer Sonny Limbo (Bertie Higgins) and publishing coordinator Randall Wixen (Fleetwood Mac, Jackson Brown.)

Aside from his original projects he did a 3 month stint playing guitar for the live stage production of Rocky Horror Picture Show in 1987. He was the guitarist for MGM recording artist and power house vocalist, Sami Jo Cole (Tell Me a Lie) in 1995. He has also played with classic rock tribute act Time Machine, on the Las Vegas convention circuit in ’97 and ’98.

Following a car accident in 2001 Jimmy Caterine took a break from performing. He was reluctant to return to the stage due to PTSD. In the years that followed Jimmy took an inward journey to confront his own personal demons. While away he had to come to terms with the many changes in the music industry. During his hiatus he created and released two independent solo CD’s.

In 2007 Jimmy recorded and released a reunion CD with Sacred Rite. Currently Jimmy owns Soulaire Sound which is a mobile recording/live sound reinforcement company in Phoenix, AZ. He performs regularly with his organic jazz sextet, Dream Chemistry.
