     Smokin’ Catnip
    by
A.B Clyde and The Kitty Litters
    Reviewed by: Rory Richardson
    Edited by: Cyrus Rhodes

This is Clyde’s latest release “Smokin’ Catnip.” After doing some research on this Los Angeles native he strikes me as kind of a mystery man. No pictures, music videos, lack of bio and I’m not so sure what his fist name is. Perhaps that’s the way this gentleman wants it.

A.B. Clyde has done an amazing job carving out a unique niche for himself with his amazing songwriting craft and “what you see is what you get” approach. Right from the start Clyde’s musicianship and world class songwriting are not called into question. The opening track: “Smokin’ Catnip” is an amazing prelude of sorts that will gently lead you by the hand down a timeless musical journey that I would describe as invigorating.

The whole CD is wonderfully simple yet wonderfully complex at the same time. It reminds me a little of The Mavericks, Dr. John, Professor Longhair, Johnny Paycheck, Kermit Riffins, David Allen Coe and even Hank Williams Jr. There are some fantastic and high octane moments on display here which gives this CD a very accessible feel emotionally. What I like most - this CD does not attempt to hide the truth in any way, shape, or form, rather it tells it with bold honesty by letting it all hang out. The vocal emotions and overall instrumentation are the ultimate report card for me when I evaluate music and this artist tells the truth – the good, bad and the ugly of it all. What am I trying to say - this CD simply delivers the goods!

    Song Samples from the CD
All song samples are from A. B. Clyde and The Kitty Litters page on CD Baby.
Smokin' Catnip   Got A Joke Goin'   Nobody Loves A Fat Man   Phone Sex
Walkin' My Bulldog   Capistrano  I Spent It  I Wish This River Was Whiskey   Bucket of Beer  Little Man  Sidney's Kidneys  Everything Fake  Rowin' The Atlantic  Better Than Sex
    Until We Meet Again

    Conclusion:
One small recommendation – On future works Clyde should not be afraid to take a few vocal risks here and there, especially at the end of some of his songs where a strong emotional finale presents itself. Really seal the deal and drive the passion of the song home vocally. When done right it will no doubt transform a good song into a legendary one. Just listen to some of the vocal work by Bob Seger and you will see exactly what I am talking about.

RATING: 10 star rating average – This CD gets 7 stars Rory Richardson...EvO:R Reviewer.
