  •   WMTS
What you see and hear is a result of the fourth attempt by students to organize a student run radio station at MTSU. While our big brother WMOT employs students, some students felt left out and unrepresented. A group of students, led by Reza Bhakter, worked countless hours to get enough interest and authorization from the Student Government Association. We entered the ether in March of 1992 on cable channel 38 (the Housing and Residential Life Channel) from 8 PM to Midnight.

We were born as WNAR (We Need A Radio). Our signal then moved to MTSU Channel 8 on the local cable system. That happened in Fall 1992. During this time, we were working on receiving FCC approval for an FM license and a construction permit With help from WMOT in donation of tower space and a transmitter, we finally hit the FM band on 88.3 MHz in the Summer of 1995. Our old call sign WNAR was changed to WMTS that fall. 810 WMTS (now WAPB) in Murfreesboro donated the call letters to us. They felt the WMTS call sign fit MTSU's station better than theirs.

WMUA has been in operation since 1949, when it first started as an AM station. WMUA broadcasts music, news, sports, and public affairs programming.

WMUA is a Registered Student Organization (RSO) at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. Our broadcasting license is held by the UMass Board of Trustees. WMUA's studios are located in the basement of the Lincoln Campus Center building on the UMass Campus.

  •   WNUR
WNUR is a non-commercial, listener-supported radio station broadcasting at a frequency of 89.3 MHz FM at a power of 7200 watts. The WNUR studios are located on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, IL and the station produces a signal which can be heard by nearly 3 million potential listeners throughout Chicagoland. WNUR also streams on the internet via the website www.wnur.org to listeners all around the world.

Through its programming, WNUR strives to provide a forum for underrepresented music and ideas. By pursuing the cultural, intellectual, and artistic aspects of radio, WNUR promotes musicians, musical genres, news, public affairs issues, and athletic events often overlooked by major media outlets. Additionally, because it is completely independent of commercial pressures, WNUR has the opportunity to provide unique and quality programming to the Northwestern, Evanston, and Chicago communities no matter how challenging, unpopular, or controversial.

  •   WPTS
Since its inception, WPTS has established itself as one of the major college radio stations in the U.S. WPTS is an important outlet in the Pittsburgh market for alternative music. We operate 24 hrs/day year round, playing independant rock-n-roll around the clock, as well as specialty programming including jazz, reggae, metal, world music, folk and the city's award winning rap show. WPTS is serviced by over 200 record labels, and we have a great working relationship with industry representatives. WPTS is also a key player in the Pittsburgh music scene working with all local promoters to support and bring to the city the music we play.

WPTS is a formatted college-radio station, as opposed to a free-form block radio style. We find this works well for two main reasons. First, it gives WPTS a professional sound. While there is a certain merit and a place for college radio stations who follow a more anti-radio outlook ("um, ah, I guess that was Foetus' latest backwards"), such a view is wrong for WPTS. WPTS was conceived of as a "working classroom", a means to expose students to the reality of radio. To do so, we try to walk a fine line, broadcasting experimental music while training as professional a staff as possible. DJ's are trained in "real radio," and the rotation helps them to see how a "real" station would work. While we avoid that annoying "in your face" hit-radio approach, our jocks are perfect for a more adult-type format. Former WPTS'ers now work for CBS Records, KDKA-TV, WTAE-TV, WYEP-FM and many others.
