Buddha-Bar, Vol. II CD
by Claude Challe
Our Price: $42.69 CD
Usually ships in 3-10 days.
Claude Challe's Buddha-Bar, Vol. II compilation has elements of Far Eastern spirituality, African song, European electronica,
and Spanish spice. The first album, Buddha-Bar, is very mellow for the most part. Deepak Chopra and Demi Moore, far
and away the most recognizable names on the album, do a spoken word ditty on love and self-worth. People who are not fans of
new age doctrine will appreciate artists such as Oliver Shanti and Consuelo Luz, both of whom contribute songs that manage
to sound musical, spiritual and ethnic at once. The second album varies from hallucinatory to groovy to fairly high-energy.
"Tears Inshalla" will appeal to fans of Eastern-influenced trance. Lyrics are of almost no importance on the album.
They do exist on most tracks, but they bounce around from English to Portuguese to Arabic. Bits and pieces and snatches
of phrases come through here and there -- just enough to make a listener feel in sync with it all. This music is intended
to be an ambient journey, and while a few of the tracks seem to stray off into Never Never Land, the majority of them should
appeal to fans of worldbeat. ~ L. Katz
2004 reissue of the second installment in the Buddha Bar series. After the success of the first Buddha Bar mix by Claude
Challe, the customers at the Paris bar may pay less attention to what's on their plate, concerned more with the background
music and ambience which accompanies it. Challe proposes with Buddha Bar II the pleasure of reliving at home the insane
nights of a magical place. He becomes a master in the art of interbreeding the ethnic rhythms of India, the Caribbean and
North Africa mixed with electronica as if it were a postcard of an epic voyage.
The music oscillates between the lightness
of talented De Phazz or Nino and the energy of Suba and Soul Ascendants. Much like the Café Del Mar series whereby Challe
is the Parisian counterpart of Jose Padilla. Originally released in 2000. Wagram.

La Llorona CD
by Lhasa
Our Price: $8.39 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Who is this woman, Lhasa de Sela? This wonderful set has no liner notes re: her past, but, since the music's what matters,
let's go with that. She writes & sings--with delicacy, passion and insolence--in Spanish. The music absorbs a truly dizzying
range of styles & influences: tango, klezmer, flamenco, film music, Gypsy/Rom, Tex-Mex, ECM Records-style soundscapes and Tom Waits.
Waits seems to be a big influence: check out the fractured tango/waltz "De Cara A La Pared." Mournful clarinets wail, percussion sounds
like thunder in the distance and Lhasa's voice--versatile, tartly seductive in a bittersweet way--draws you in. The adventurous,
especially those who are into world-music fusion, should get this.
Personnel: Lhasa De Sela (vocals); Yves Desrosiers (guitar, lap steel guitar, saw, lap steel bass, accordion, banjo, percussion);
Mara Tremblay (violin); Duane "Nervous Norman" Larson (clarinet); Didier Dumoutier (accordion); Jean Sabourin (sousaphone); Mario
Legare (bass, acoustic bass); Francois Lalonde (percussion, drums, programming).
Spin (12/98, pp.174-175) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Her music is naturally itinerant: Klezmer clarinets ride over spaghetti-Western
soundscapes, pedal steel coyotes wail outside a Brecht/Weill cantina, and radiator pipes clang over Spanish sibilants that splay like Tori Amos's knees..."

Welcome To Mali CD
by Amadou & Mariam
Our Price: $12.69 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Following the wildly successful DIMANCHE A BAMAKO in 2008, World Circuit decided to bring the blind Malian duo Amadou Bagayoko
and Mariam Doumbia to American shores. WELCOME TO MALI, issued on Nonesuch, is their stateside debut. Blur's Damon Albarn was enlisted to
help out here--and he does as a co-writer and producer on the album's opening track and first single "Sabali." It's a killer track, with
waves of Malian blues and incantatory singing, especially from the plaintive voice of Mariam, which contrasts well with the grainy,
more guttural inflections of Amadou. Albarn also adds waves of gentle but pronounced electronica and some fine basswork, and pushes
Amadou's raw guitar into the forefront.
The rest of the set is filled with infectious Malian folk music threaded through with European pop influences. The best beats
such as "Compagnon de la Vie" with its funky Hammond B-3, "Ce N'Est Pas Bon" with its driving guitar and marimbas, and the traditional
"Djuru" are simply infectious with their rhythmic invention and meld of voices. The title track is pure funky goodness with its killer
meld of Malian folk forms, percussion, and European-style street funk. Ultimately, WELCOME TO MALI is an auspicious and welcome
introduction to Amadou & Mariam, whose music has universal appeal and breaks new ground for Afro-pop worldwide.
Spin (p.76) - "Damon Albarn mans the controls for 'Sabali,' a wonderfully strange bit of electro pop that floats Mariam's
voice high above waves of synth arpeggios..."

Feet Of Flames Soundtrack CD
by Feet Of Flames
Our Price: $11.35 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Michael Flatley is one of the top dancers and choreographers in modern performing arts. Lord of the Dance rivals Bill Whelan's Riverdance as
one of the top dance phenomena of the '90s. Feet of Flames is also an important dance event of that
decade. It matches Flatley with Ronan Hardiman again. As an event, it loses much in the translation to CD, but the music is beautiful
and diverse. Hardiman covers many different styles and genres, including Celtic, new age, orchestral, contemporary vocal, and atmospheric
ambient. It is an entertaining listen but more worthy of a visual experience. The disc will appeal to fans of the aforementioned discs by
Flatley & Hardiman and by Whelan. ~ Jim Brenholts
"Feet Of Flames" was the hugely successful follow up to "Lord Of The Dance" and brought Michael Flatley worldwide renown and popularity.
The show has toured the UK extensively and won many fans not only for the stunning dancing but for Ronan Hardiman's brilliant accompanying
music. Originally commissioned to write the music for "Lord Of The Dance", Flatley was soon catapulted to fame and has won a huge number
of credits and awards for his work.
Personnel: Ronan Hardiman (keyboards, programming); Anne Buckley (vocals); Dave Keary (acoustic guitar, electric guitar, bouzouki);
Máire Breatnach (fiddle); Michael Flatley (flute, dancer); Paul Drennan (keyboards); Jason Duffy (drums).

Very Best Of Ethiopiques CD
by Ethiopiques
Our Price: $16.19 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The Buda Musique label of France had released more than 20 volumes in its Ethiopiques series over the span of a decade by the
time this two-disc compilation arrived from the British Manteca label. That sheer abundance of available music makes
the Very Best of Ethiopiques something of a lifesaver for those who just want to dabble or simply feel lost navigating the murky waters of rare
Ethiopian music and only care to hear a concentrated sampler of highlights.
Compiled by Francis Falceto, Ethiopiques is a remarkable ongoing project that assembles recordings of singers and musicians from the
East African nation, largely from the '60s and '70s. Although much of this music, which often treads the line between modern and traditional,
was popular locally, its exposure to the West was as good as nonexistent until Buda began digging deep into the back catalogs of labels like
Amha and Kaifa and making sense of it all for voracious world music fans. The names of the artists whose music is presented on this sizzling,
essential compilation will probably not be familiar to those who haven't already investigated the series: singers such as Mahmoud Ahmed,
Tlahoun Gèssèssè, Mulatu Astatké, and Alèmayèhu Eshèté, who is often compared to James Brown for reasons that become apparent upon hearing
him here, are hardly household names even among cognoscenti of African music. But the Ethiopian music, which draws heavily from then-contemporary
American genres such as funk and soul, cross-pollinating them with indigenous sounds, is all well worth hearing. One could invest in the
entire series or in individual volumes that pique interest, but for the uninitiated, this wonderfully curated set is definitely the first
place to head. ~ Jeff Tamarkin
2007 double CD set featuring the best tracks from the universally-praised Ethiopiques series which highlights the glorious musical
sounds coming from Ethiopia. The music is unlike anything you've experienced before and has been growing in popularity in recent
times and has been championed by some of the most respected artists in Rock including Elvis Costello, Robert Plant, Tom Waits, Brian
Eno and others. 28 tracks featuring cuts from Maryam Tesfa, Mulatu Astatque, Mahmoud Ahmed, Alemayehu Eshete and many others. Manteca
