Opiate Sun CD
by Jesu
Our Price: $8.49 CD / $3.96 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Whether or not it is his intention, Justin Broadrick's Jesu project continues to move into ever more song-oriented material, while never
lessening the volume or the sheer melodic thud of his attack. Opiate Sun is released on Mark Kozelek's Cabo Verde
imprint. Initially, it was conceived as the first of a projected two-part EP idea: Broadrick originally wanted each EP to feature a
collaboration between his live (Dave Cochrane and Phil Petrocelli) and studio (Ted Parsons and Diarmuid Dalton) bands. In the end,
Broadrick rejected the idea and plays everything here himself and combines all four songs on one release. Does that narrow the possibilities
for the final product? Yes, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. These songs cover just under 26 minutes in length. The opener, "Losing
Streak," comes dangerously close to a cough syrup-intoxicated Swervedriver -- with Broadrick's way up-front vocal sounding not unlike that
of Adam Franklin, but it's even heavier, sludgier, and -- conversely -- more melodic. "Morning Sun," the closer, sounds like anything but.
It is instead a dirgelike piece of droning, guitar-fueled funereal post-rock with a tortoise crawl of a vocal melody that extends no
further than four notes in total. "Opiate Sun," the set's longest piece and title track, covers no new ground at all, but with its
gorgeous multivalent guitar layers, slow processional drumming, and middle-timbre bassline -- the only thing not distorted on the cut
-- it doesn't need to because its shattered emotion comes bleeding through in spades.
"Deflated" is the most distorted, throbbing,
metallic piece here, though it too contains a lovely lyric line that contrasts wonderfully with the low, low, low-end bassline and
open-tuned guitar riffs. While it's true that Broadrick continues to mine the emotional and sonic terrain of every Jesu release, it's
a sound so obsessive in its execution that it is nearly addictive for the listener. ~ Thom Jurek

Signify CD
by Porcupine Tree
Our Price: $14.15 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This Kscope edition of the album comes packeaged in a luxury rigid digibook.
The first proper album by the full band, Signify was the next great step forward for Porcupine Tree, a distinct
advancement in how well the foursome could completely rock out as well as find its own narcotic style of ambient exploration. The title
track signals intentions clearly after the fragmentary sample-collage start of "Bornlivedie" kicks things off. Based on a storming riff
from Wilson, the Edwin/Maitland team provide a crisp, driving beat, while Barbieri throws some intriguingly aggressive keyboard work,
nervy and unsettling, to offset the calmer parts he also adds to fill things out. Everyone gets to show a little bit of individual flair
as the album progresses. Edwin punctuates the epic surge of "Sleep of No Dreaming" with some plucked double bass as well as electric,
while Maitland himself takes over on (wordless) vocals and full composition for "Light Mass Prayers," a minimal, entrancing piece. One
thing that hasn't noticeably changed much is Wilson's general songwriting and ear for arrangements -- good, but there's little in the way
of distinct change in style, leaving it to the performance of the band as a whole to provide the album's own unique stamp. For all that
Wilson may once again be singing obliquely on the pressures and nature of end-of-century life, he still does so in an engagingly
left-of-center way. Consider the portrait of an incipient Internet/cyberpunk world in "Every Home Is Wired" or the snap-or-not?
This special edition features a complete bonus album called Insignificance that was previously released as a fan club cassette in an edition of only 500 copies.

Tarot Sport CD
by Fuck Buttons
Our Price: $11.59 CD / $6.93 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Fuck Buttons' Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power can't be accused of repeating themselves on TAROT SPORT. Post-rock, noise,
and electronics lived in perfect (dis)harmony on their debut, STREET HORRRSING, but here the duo channel their intensity in a focused,
rather than explosive, way. Hung and Power drafted Andrew Weatherall, who remixed STREET HORRRSING's "Sweet Love for Planet Earth," to
produce TAROT SPORT; while the album is more overtly electronic than Fuck Buttons' previous music, Weatherall's influence is felt more
in TAROT SPORT's precision. Laser-guided beats and drones propel these songs on linear trajectories, most strikingly on the opening
track "Surf Solar," which shoots listeners into space with a sleekly pumping four-on-the-floor beat and sparkling electronics that
give the impression of stars streaking by. The track is so aerodynamic that it doesn't get truly combustive until two-thirds of the
way through--an approach TAROT SPORT repeats often, and a markedly different one from the duo's debut. Not knowing when or whether
Fuc- Buttons were going to drape listeners' ears with celestial drones or assault them with demonic, Wolf Eyes-style shrieks was a
significant part of STREET HORRRSING's thrill. While it was probably a smart move on Hung and Power's part to not try to recapture
that tension, occasionally it's missed. However, TAROT SPORT may actually succeed the most when Fuck Buttons make the biggest departures
from their debut's territory. "Olympians"' euphoric loops have a heady, heavenly quality all their own, while "The Lisbon Maru" is
the musical equivalent of a wide plain: vast and majestic, even if the scenery doesn't change much. When Fuck Buttons revisit their
dark side, they make it count, and they make it fit the rest of TAROT SPORT's aesthetic. "Rough Steez" turns their first album's
evil drum circles into something metallic and automatic, with pistons and pinions pumping and creaking. "Phantom Limb"'s writhing
layers of dripping electronics don't just sound like music for aliens, they sound like music for ALIENS. Hung and Power unite the
album's often polarized sounds on the finale "Flight of the Feathered Serpent," which balances its elongated organ drones with
flashy drums worthy of Carnaval. A more hypnotic and lulling ride overall, TAROT SPORT may lack some of STREET HORRRSING's pure
visceral impact, but it's just as satisfying on its own terms, as well as an impressive step forward for Fuck Buttons.
Photographer: Lucy Johnston.Spin (p.75) - "Sonically, they're still supreme noise crafters -- 'The Lisbon Maru' trades their debut's airy tribalism for military snares and horse clops."
Q (Magazine) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The seven tracks clatter and surge with gleeful, filthy distortion as waves of squall are layered like the sonic booms of multiple jet engines."
Pitchfork (Website) - "[I]t marks a comprehensive stylistic shift for the duo's sound, from experimental noise with a buried pop sensibility to a sort of modernized electronic take on classic post-rock structures."

In Absentia CD
by Porcupine Tree
Our Price: $8.55 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
There's a breed of (post-1980s) bands with the same degree of grand rock experimentalism as Pink Floyd and Yes, who simultaneously adhere
to the concept of concise songwriting. Porcupine Tree is one such band--their sound is a balance of lush ambient textures, charming vocal
harmonies, rock & roll directness, and acoustically- and electronically-generated sounds. Their debut IN ABSENTIA shows all these elements
in place, rich with the likely possibility of them becoming a contemporary counterpart to Pink Floyd.
Hailed by Billboard as 'cinematic...simple gorgeous', Porcupine Tree are unquestionably one of the UK's most inspired and inventive rock
groups. In Absentia is their eagerly anticipated Lava Records debut. Digipak. 2002.
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.Rolling Stone (12/12/02, p.94) - "
...Dense, dark Seventies prog-rock ambition....Their heaviest album yet..."
CMJ (10/7/02) - "...A quirky, totally left of center release....IN ABSENTIA is one of those albums that begs to be listened to
from the first note to the closing outro..."

Funeral CD
by Arcade Fire
Our Price: $11.89 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This Montreal ensemble's fiery debut is marked by surging guitars, soulful strings, driving drums, brilliant bass lines,
and the quavering vocals of married couple Win Butler and Regine Chassagne. The group's song structures careen through a vast territory
of musical and personal history, with lyrics warm with memories of childhood neighborhoods and deceased loved ones, resulting in an
alternating current of joy and sadness.
Favorably compared to the Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev, and Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire's sound seems to come from a lifetime
of listening to the Cure, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, and many others--even a dose of soul gets worked into these grand anthems.
Chassagne delivers some spellbinding vocals on "Haiti," while the tinkling piano and strings on "Crown of Love" conjure up a
heartbroken surfside prom. In 2004, this made many critics' year-end lists, and it's no wonder--the songs on FUNERAL are so packed
with unique instrumentation, mesmerizing build-ups, and galvanizing tempo changes that they seem culled from some enigmatic,
decade-spanning rock anthology.
Mojo (Publisher) (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Echoes of Wire at their mid-'80s jackhammer funk zenith abound on 'Rebellion',
while yearning cellos frame a breathtaking turn from Chassagne on 'In the Backseat'."
Clash (magazine) (p.78) - "Few albums of similar emotional intensity have had the same staying power as FUNERAL..."

Agaetis Byrjun CD
by Sigur Ros
Our Price: $11.65 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This stately Iceland rock outfit took the alternative-music world by storm with its second album, AGAETIS BYRJUN--a haunting,
eloquent, 76-minute instant classic. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language he calls "Hopelandic" (a combination of Icelandic
and his own angelic calling), over the lyrical ebb and flow of feedback-drenched guitar, gushing keyboards, gently driving bass, and
drums that crash like the surf of an alien ocean. After a droning beginning, the curtains suddenly part with "Svefn-G-Englar," revealing
a sound as wide open and exhilarating as Iceland's landscape. Later, the mournful violin and slowly cascading beats of "Flugufrelsarinn"
give way to ghostly horn sections, orchestral crescendos, stretches of silence, crashing dissonance, sad piano lines, and a Radiohead-esque
dip into the realm of rock on "Olsen Olsen." The breathtaking scope and emotional richness of this outing turned Sigur Ros into an
overnight success. Within a year of AGAETIS BYRJUN's release on the small British label Fatcat Records, the band went from obscurity
to selling out major venues, scoring films, and signing with MCA, who re-released the album to even wider acclaim.
CMJ (10/30/00, p.22) - "...Deep, almost primordial beauty....It doesn't get much more sublime than this."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.58) - Ranked #70 in Mojo's "100 Modern Classics" -- "So captivatingly diffuse, AGAETIS BYRJUN sounds as though it was beamed in from 1,000 years ago."
NME (Magazine) (12/30/00, p.79) - Ranked #35 in NME's "Top 50 Albums Of The Year" - "...The shoegazing soundtrack to frozen skies and magma flows..."
