Time Out CD
by Dave Brubeck
Our Price: $6.29 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Dave Brubeck's TIME OUT ranks alongside Miles Davis' KIND OF BLUE as one of the few advanced jazz masterpieces to achieve great
commercial success. In fact, the widespread popularity of TIME OUT, with its cool-toned ambience, smooth style, and elements borrowed from classical music, helped make modern jazz a mainstream phenomenon.
The ubiquitous "Take Five" may be overplayed, but that doesn't diminish the joy of its complex melodic hooks, its perfectly executed solos, or the swinging slink of its 5/4 signature. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" collages Mozart, cool swing, and Brubeck's own classically oriented piano style, and the airy, delicate "Everybody's Jumpin'" showcases the lyrical splendor of saxophonist Paul Desmond. With bassist Gene Wright and drummer Joe Morello keeping the tricky rhythms agile and swift, the Dave Brubeck Quartet blended complexity and accessibility for pure jazz pleasure on TIME OUT, an album everyone should own.

Historicity CD
by Vijay Iyer
Our Price: $14.69 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner,
Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even
remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out. With HISTORICTY, he touches on many different levels of acumen, influenced by contemporary alternative rock, Motown, show tunes, pop fusion, the early creative music of the '70s, and ethnic strains. Iyer also revisits two of his older compositions, with the majority of this progressive jazz -- whether "covers" or originals -- done completely in his own scintillating style.

Koln Concert CD
by Keith Jarrett
Our Price: $14.59 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Albums that sell vast quantities are not always to be recommended. This exceptional example of solo piano is the biggest selling record
in the 25 year history of the pioneering jazz label ECM. It is an almost perfect recording of the art of piano dynamics, full of emotion, and throughout the hour or so duration the listener is never bored. Jarrett has repeated his concerts of improvisation hundreds of times, many have been recorded, and presumably, many routes of his spontaneity have led to blind alleys of jazz doodling. This is the best recorded example of the art, unlikely to be bettered.

Migration Soundtrack CD
by Soundtrack
Our Price: $10.65 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
On this diverse and generally interesting (if not essential) CD, keyboardist/composer Dave Grusin performs a
five-song suite from his soundtrack of The Milagro Beanfield War along with selections by Harvey Mason,
his brother Don Grusin, Hugh
Masekela, Marcus Miller and himself.
Other than the suite (which has a string section), the music is mostly played by smaller groups, with Branford
Marsalis on tenor and soprano a major asset on three songs and flugelhornist Hugh Masekela taking a solo on his
own "Polina." ~ Scott Yanow
Principally recorded at Sunset Sound, Los Angeles, California; Record Plant Stage M, Hollywood, California; Clinton Recording Studios, New York, New York.

Night Train CD
by Oscar Peterson
Our Price: $11.69 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Master jazz pianist Oscar Peterson had his longest-running trio with bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen, and NIGHT TRAIN may
be their finest moment. The repertoire here is comprised mostly of standards, although the choices seem deliberate.
In treatments of jazz chestnuts like "C-Jam Blues" and "Georgia On My Mind," the trio works inside these well-known songs, painting over familiar colors and re-working traditional melodies, while staying true to the spirit of each tune. The chemistry between Thigpen, Brown, and Peterson is unassailable. Peterson, in particular, is at the top of his game here, running the whole history of jazz through his dexterous, nimble fingers with an in-the-pocket ease not always apparent on his earlier recordings.

Destiny CD
by Jim Brickman
Our Price: $7.59 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Jim Brickman's wonderfully romantic compositions have touched many over the years, resulting in success in various genres. His recordings
have charted in adult contemporary and smooth jazz formats as well as making inroads to country and pop playlists. He is a composer, performer,
and pianist extraordinaire and has recorded with the likes of Martina McBride, Collin Raye and Kenny Loggins.

Passing Ships CD
by Andrew Hill
Our Price: $9.45 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This larger group session was recorded for Blue Note in 1969 but had to wait until 2003 to see the light of day.
It was worth the wait, since PASSING SHIPS is one of composer-pianist Andrew Hill's most varied and distinctive efforts.
The group here isn't all that big when you check the lineup, but Hill's skillful writing makes it sound as if we're listening to a more spacious ensemble. In addition, he makes most effective use of reedman Joe Farrell's multi-instrumental talents here. Not only does Farrell excel in the usual tenor and soprano saxophone roles but it's his English horn that sings the plaintive theme on the title track and his dusky alto flute that establishes the mood of the exotic "Noon Tide." The writing throughout is fresh and, most of all, coherent, which can't be said for all free-jazz endeavors of the era. But Andrew Hill had a particular knack for making the avant-garde a part of the mainstream. With PASSING SHIPS, he joins the ranks of Mingus and Gil Evans as a great composer-arranger for large forces.

Joy Ride CD
by Bob James
Our Price: $6.19 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
JOY RIDE was nominated for the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.
James traipses from tight, funky ensemble workouts to soupy, unctuous melanges of sound that do for eardrums what
sensual massages to for sore backs. Only a cynic won't fall for these 12 brightly colored
instrumental cuts. As always, James has assembled the creme de la creme of studio musicians to help flesh out his keyboard noodlings into grandiose aural landscapes.

Ground CD
by Tord Gustavsen Trio
Our Price: $14.45 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
In the proto-typical Scandinavian ECM style of modern jazz oriented music, pianist Tord Gustavsen follows the path of previous
progenitors influenced by Bill Evans, forged by Keith Jarrett, and extended by the likes of Mike Nock. This is certainly
late-night, nocturnal music, completely reserved and relaxing, ultra-melodic, calm, peaceful, and non-threatening.
Rarely does a tempo move beyond medium, a dynamic merge above mezzo piano, and any mood goes farther than moderately cool.
Well within this consistent timbre, Gustavsen and his trio show a modicum of diversity and influences. Fellow ECM labelmate
Bobo Stenson's style and technique is most extant during the lilting "Edges of Happiness," "Twins" is spiritual, calm, and
light but not somber, while "Token of Tango" is perfectly representative of its title. "Curtains Aside" mixes march rhythm
in 6/8 with a regal light funk, the delicate waltz "Being There" is reminiscent of "The Shadow of Your Smile," while darker
ballads "Colours of Mercy" and "Sentiment" sport undoubtedly religious overtones. Gustavsen, while playing laid-back,
pristine, pretty, and serene music, is far from challenging convention or pushing the envelope. Conversely, his personal
voice is fully realized. Time will tell whether this style finds a worldwide audience, moves away from this type of
contemporary texture music, or takes the approach he has established to any more extreme measures, even softer or more
forceful. ~ Michael G. Nastos
