Endgame CD
by Megadeth
Our Price: $15.65 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The release of 2009's ENDGAME brings with it a startling realization: if first-generation thrash metal fans had been polled about
which of the genre's "Big Four" -- Metallica, Slayer, Anthrax, and Megadeth -- would prove to be the most resilient and consistently
prolific over the next quarter century, the only sure-fire consensus would probably have been "well, anyone but Megadeth!" And yet,
12 studio albums and 150-plus songs later -- more than any of the other three have managed -- that's exactly what's come to pass.
The group's second release for Roadrunner, whose title apparently refers to "coming full circle" rather than any sort of goodbye,
finds the latest iteration of Megadeth-- debuting new guitarist Chris Broderick(ex-Nevermore, Jag Panzer)--working primarily within
their technical thrash comfort zone (think PEACE SELLS through RUST IN PEACE), with only a few latter-day elements and rare
experimental diversions. As such, deceptively simple guitar-shredding master classes like "This Day We Fight!," "1,320" (surprisingly,
written about "funny car" racing), and first single "Headcrusher" are cut from the same bloody cloth as "Wake Up Dead" and "Set the
World Afire," while politicized rants such as "44 Minutes," "Bite the Hand That Feeds," and the title cut recall old stalwarts
like "Peace Sells" and "Holy Wars."

Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da CD
by Rammstein
Our Price: $17.58 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Anyone familiar with the industrial-metal band's dark sense of irony should take one look at the title of Rammstein's 2009
album LIEBE IST FUR ALLE DA ("Love Is There For Everyone") and conclude that this one is a mean monster. Combining the
tightness and punch of their 1998 album SEHNSUCHT with the musicianship and elaborate textures of their later work, LIEBE
IST is a grand achievement, skillfully dividing its time between razor sharp metal rockers like "B********" or the opening
theme song "Rammlied" and nostalgic, cabaret pieces that conjure the spirits of Weil and Brecht at a goth club.
Best of the
latter is the naked and haunting closer "Roter Sand" but little touches of a sinister yesteryear are everywhere,
like the fake vaudeville music in "Haifisch" or the soundtrack strings of "Wiener Blut" which are eventually overcome
by a guitar crunching juggernaut. This strange mix of styles is more effective here than it has been for about a decade,
and there's no threat of the album becoming ponderous either as the economical tracklist and purposeful songs wipe away
the sins of their previous album, 2005's ROSENROT.
For the rest of the world, this is that once a decade, perfectly balanced Rammstein
album that's immediately accessible but wide and deep enough to explore for years to come.

Left Hand Path CD
by Entombed
Our Price: $12.19 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
With their monumental debut album, Left Hand Path, Entombed crashed through the gates of the international death metal scene and foreshadowed
the pivotal role that Scandinavia would soon play in the evolution of the then-burgeoning genre. These Swedes had earlier made ripples
throughout the underground with their But Life Goes On demo (1989), as well as their prior demos as Nihilist, which had gotten them
signed to Earache. Left Hand Path did more than make ripples upon its 1990 release, however -- it came crashing like a tidal wave.
Beyond doubt it raised the bar for death metal, significantly challenging American trailblazers like Death, Obituary, and Morbid
Angel. What Entombed did was take the extremity of Earache's stable of British grindcore bands (Napalm Death, Carcass, and Godflesh)
and apply it to the elaborate songwriting structures of the aforementioned American death metal bands.
Left Hand Path is a monumental accomplishment, not only for Entombed but for
death metal in general. The band would go on to record many more fine albums, but none would be quite as epochal and seminal as this one.
[Earache reissued the album with two bonus tracks: "Carnival Leftovers" and "Premature Autopsy." These tracks don't sound out of place,
but to an extent they do dilute the succinct impact of the album as it was originally intended.] ~ Jason Birchmeier

Concert Classics CD
by Judas Priest
Our Price: $11.18 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
There was a time when British Steel was the hottest, hardest, and most awesome substance on the planet. On Judas Priest
"Concert Classics", here it is, in its most appropriate circumstances: live, on stage. Judas Priest re-invented heavy metal.
The first band to use the twin-guitar attack, they built on the foundation Black Sabbath had laid and moved metal to a new level.
Looking back on the body of the work that the classic Priest line-up of Rob Halford, Glenn Tipton, K.K. Downing, Ian Hill and
Dave Holland has left us, nobody is in any doubt that the "British Steel" album was the finest studio work the band produced.
There are also those people who will tell you that British Steel was the finest British studio album ever made.
This album is
taken from the tour that supported the release of "British Steel" and it takes the majesty of that album into its true context:
in front of a paying audience.

Night Is The New Day CD
by Katatonia
Our Price: $14.38 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The latest album from Swedish doom rockers Katatonia, their first studio effort since 2006, is as moody and beautiful as their other
latter-day work. The group's career can be marked in two stages based on the condition of singer Jonas Renske's vocal cords --
basically, after the band's first two albums, he developed health problems that prevented him from performing harsh death growls,
and ever since the band has moved in an increasingly melodic direction, even covering songs by Will Oldham and Jeff Buckley.
It's unsurprising to learn that Opeth's Mikael Åkerfeldt helped out by performing the harsh vocals on Katatonia's Brave Murder
Day album and Sounds of Decay EP in 1996 and 1997, since Night Is the New Day songs "Foresaker" and "Idle Blood" could be
outtakes from that band's Damnation or Blackwater Park. Other tracks like "The Longest Year," the hilariously titled "Onward
into Battle" (a song this slow and lush would only inspire soldiers to lie down for a nap), and "Liberation" are slightly more
unique with their use of programmed rhythms and trip-hop keyboards beneath and behind the crunching guitars. Overall, this is
a very beautiful and reflective album, though at this point Katatonia are only notionally a metal band, much more focused on
moody (as in Moody Blues) beauty than vulgar displays of power. ~ Phil Freeman
Arranger: Katatonia.
Personnel: Jonas Renkse (vocals); Fredrik Norrman (guitar); Daniel Liljekvist (drums).
Audio Mixer: David Castillo

Those Whom The Gods Detest CD
by Nile
Our Price: $13.15 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most
hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few
exceptions -- able ...
to put their own unmistakable fingerprints on this heavy duty style (Egyptian-influenced lyrics and musical bits,
highly impressive instrumental dexterity, etc.). On their sixth studio effort overall, 2009's Those Whom the Gods Detest,
Nile has once again proven that they are a step ahead of the rest of the pack. Although some of the sonic depth has to be
attributed to producer Neil Kernon (after all, he worked with such sticklers for audio perfection as Queensr˙che in the past),
it's the true metallic fury that Nile create themselves that makes it all extremely impressive.
Case in point,
such delicious death metal ditties as "Kafir!," while on selections such as the title track and what's sure to
be top metal song title of 2009, "Yezd Desert Ghul Ritual in the Abandoned Towers of Silence," Karl Sanders shows
why he is considered by many to be the finest guitarist of the extreme metal genre (both songs incorporate Sanders'
love of all things Middle Eastern). "Exotic" and "heavy metal" are not often terms used together, but in the case of
Those Whom the Gods Detest, they go together as splendidly as peanut butter and jelly. ~ Greg Prato
2009 release from the Egyptian themed extreme death metal outfits, their second for the Nuclear Blast label. 9 tracks

Design Your Universe CD
by Epica
Our Price: $13.15 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Dutch pomp-metal band Epica, fronted by classically trained mezzo-soprano Simone Simons, released their second album
for Nuclear Blast only a year after their label debut, the more unique The Classical Conspiracy. That two-disc live set found
them performing a mix of classical works and their own songs with backing by a full orchestra and choir.
This album offers more of their bombastic goth metal songs, with Simons' vocals floating atop an ever flowing stream
of complicated drumming, epic riffs, and shredtastic solos. The use of orchestral instruments to add John Williams-like
climaxes is intermittently successful, but the music is just as frequently stripped down to an unaccompanied piano or
to just the rock band, and that works, too. The very occasional interruption of male death growls is less necessary;
frankly, the band should just let Simons do her Sarah Brightman-esque thing and keep the riffs cranking behind her.
If you like this sort of thing (Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, After Forever, Leaves' Eyes, etc., etc.), or if you're a big
Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, this is exactly the sort of thing you'll like. ~ Phil Freeman
2009 release from the Dutch gothic metal band includes 13 tracks
