Stephen Stills' October 2008 show at Shepherd's Bush was designed as a showcase for the breadth of the singer/songwriter's
work, opening with acoustic numbers then working toward a full-blown electric set, touching on
everything from Buffalo Springfield and Crosby Stills and Nash to Mannassas and beyond. Stills doesn't avoid his
crowd-pleasers - "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes," "For What It's Worth," "Love the One You're With" all appear - but chooses
to spend most of his time digging deep, building his set around songs like "Change Partners," "Bluebird,"
"Rock & Roll Woman" and "Blind Fiddler," throwing in covers of Dylan's "Girl from the North Country" and Tom
Petty's "Wrong Thing to Do."

"This is not a show," murmurs Michael Stipe at the start of LIVE AT THE OLYMPIA and it's not quite misdirection.
R.E.M.'s five-night residency at Dublin's Olympia in the summer of 2007 functioned as working
rehearsals for their fourteenth album ACCELERATE, with the band testing out each of the songs, exploring arrangements,
finding breaking points, and pairing them with older songs that informed their back-to-basics move. As rehearsal,
it paid off splendidly -- road-testing the material made it stronger, resulting in their best album in years --
but the audience was in for a real treat, with the band digging deep into their back catalog to play some of
their best non-hit songs. Just as importantly, the band sounds completely engaged with the material,
enjoying playing the songs again.
R.E.M. is here -- a tighter, cleaner band than the
scruffy renegades of the '80s, but still the same band, which is evident here in ways it never was
on the perfectly fine R.E.M. LIVE. That was a production. This is rock & roll.

Live In London CD

After taking a decade-and-a-half vacation from live performance, septuagenarian singer/songwriter/saint Leonard
Cohen returned to the stage in 2008 for a European tour. During his absence, his popularity had grown to such a
degree that his London concert took place at the city's O2 Arena. With the gathered masses sounding suitably
enraptured, Cohen can be heard delivering a long program that serves as both career summary and mission
reiteration on this double-length live album (FYI, there's also a DVD companion release).
Amazingly, Cohen sounds even more vital and intense than the last time he strode the boards, back in the
mid-'90s. For all the high-powered cover versions over the years, his cavernously deep voice remains the
most effective instrument for delivering his poetic incantations, looming large over a subtle, sympathetic
band. He invests '60s classics like "Suzanne" and "Bird on a Wire" with new energy, underlining their
continued relevance, while establishing a place in the canon for latter-day gems like "Anthem" and
"Democracy," all the while punctuating his performance with carefully placed quips that show his
trademark black humor to be in full effect.

No matter which of Pink Floyd's leaders (Barrett, Waters, Gilmour) is at the controls, the band has always
been about grandeur. The epic scale of their psychedelic explorations, the life-altering themes of their recordings,
their ground-breaking,
conceptual stagings, have all helped in the construction of the group's mythology. And more than any other rock
band's, Pink Floyd's myths have endured even as the band and its fans have grown older.
A live double album, PULSE works not only as an extended postcard of 1994's biggest tour, but as the Floyd's
myth re-charger. Consider the facts: the release was celebrated with a laser-light show atop the Empire State
Building, and the spine of the CD package features a perpetually blinking light. But, as is always the case
with Pink Floyd, there is method in their madness. The blinking light harkens back to the heartbeat that is
the unifying theme of their classic DARK SIDE OF THE MOON album, which is performed in its entirety on disc two.
Disc one is an approximation of the band's first set, featuring a powerful run through Syd Barrett's
"Astronomy Domine" (the definition of late-'60s British psychedelia), as well as a host of songs
from 1987's MOMENTARY LAPSE OF REASON and '94s DIVISION BELL. But the second set is the true keeper
of the two. Having made its tour debut on the 25th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing, DARK SIDE
loses none of its glow when transferred to a live setting. D
David Gilmour ably handles Roger Waters'
vocal parts, and emphasizes instrumental interludes--"On The Run," for instance, sounds like a true
precursor to The Orb's ambient noodlings. The radio hits ("Money," "Us and Them," "Brain Damage")
are all re-interpreted enough to sound novel, but still retain a comforting familiarity.
4 Way Street CD
by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

4 WAY STREET caught Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young on their 1970 concert tour at the height of their success.
Even with its included bits of audience patter and a few overlong tracks ("Southern Man" and "Carry On"),
the album is varied and exciting, and perfectly captures the quartet's remarkable singer/songwriter chemistry
and sparkling harmonies. Stephen Still's classics like "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" and "Love the One You're With"
abut David Crosby tunes like the beautiful "Laughing" and Graham Nash's positive, instructional "Teach Your Children."
But the real treat of 4 WAY STREET is the inclusion of Neil Young's solo material, including "Cowgirl In the
Sand" from Young's first solo album, and the riveting "Ohio," about the Kent State student massacre. (The
CD reissue also includes the Young medley "The Loner/Cinnamon Girl/Down By The River.") By the time the
album came out, however, Young had already left the group, and Crosby, Stills & Nash began to work on solo
and duo projects. 4 WAY STREET captures the end of an era, then, and remains an essential part of any
folk and singer/songwriter collection.
