Grand Wazoo CD
by Frank Zappa
Our Price: $7.25 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This album appeared within the same year as WAKA/JAWAKA and continued Zappa's exploration of the possibilities
for composing and arranging material for a big band with a hefty brass and reed section. Both albums were produced
during the period in which he was recuperating from injuries sustained when he was thrown from the stage during a
London concert the year before. THE GRAND WAZOO still sounds like a fresh and equal marriage of Zappa's already developed
and apparent musical sensibilities with large ensemble jazz writing. The couple vocal numbers utilize the singing as
another melodic line, and are knitted into the whole fabric rather than laying on top.
Unfortunately, after this pair of 1972 albums, Zappa never revisited this particular approach again--his touring
bands were never on this scale and his large-scale writing was directed towards orchestras.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Rolling Stone (2/1/73, p.44) - "...back in the forefront, where he belongs, with an inspired and consistent album containing some of
his best intrumental work, compositions and arrangements...an excellent indication of his particular talent at its best..."

The Inner Mounting Flame CD
by Mahavishnu Orchestra
Our Price: $6.85 CD / $7.92
Usually ships in 1-2 days
As British bands like Yes, ELP, and Genesis extended the borders of rock & roll, John McLaughlin had seized the opportunity
to do the same with jazz. The first stars of the jazz/rock fusion camp, the Mahavishnu Orchestra played sellout concerts,
sold records in quantities previously unheard of by jazz musicians, and captured a crossover audience of forward-looking jazz
devotees and progressive rock fans.
The music on THE INNER MOUNTING FLAME is incendiary and highly improvisational. Well-conceived unison melodic passages
structure each tune, and McLaughlin and company play like the virtuosos they are throughout. "The Noonward Race" features
a bluesy, yet harmonically dissonant solo from McLaughlin, and the frenetic drumming of Billy Cobham. In contrast, in "A
Lotus on Irish Streams," McLaughlin soars passionately on an acoustic guitar, while violinist Jerry Goodman adds a simple, folky melody.
All tracks have been digitally remastered using 20-bit technology.
Ultradiscs are mastered from the original master tapes using Mobile Fidelity's proprietary mastering technique, then plated
with 24 karat gold and housed in a stress-resistant lift-lock jewel box.

Heavy Weather CD
by Weather Report
Our Price: $6.75 CD / $7.92 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Master Sound releases are 24-karat gold CDs remastered from first-generation masters. This process utilizes 20-bit
technology and Sony's "Super Bit Mapping" system. This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
Probably the best fusion album ever made, and the coming together of five precociously talented musicians. Joe Zawinul
and Wayne Shorter assembled the unit with little knowledge that the complex music would become so accessible. Two compostions
stand out; the graceful 'A Remark You Made', an evocative love song without words, and the hit single 'Birdland' (so successful
it was even used by Akai for a major advertising campaign). On these two Zawinul compostions their genius bass player
Jaco Pastorius gives a taste of what he was capable of. He bent the notes to make them talk, and that high octave solo
on 'Birdland' is still a treasured moment.

Blow By Blow CD
by Jeff Beck
Our Price: $6.75 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Realizing the overwhelming response he received in concert with his extended instrumental breaks, Beck finally bit the bullet
and released his first all-instrumental work in 1975. The jazz-rock tour de force BLOW BY BLOW was produced by Beatles
mainman George Martin and proved that Beck's six-string skills could easily carry an album. Completely inspired by
the challenge and surrounded by a stellar band and solid compositions, Beck lets loose throughout. The result is one
of his very best works. Highlights include the funky opening track "You Know What I Mean," a pair of Stevie Wonder-penned tracks
("Cause We've Ended as Lovers" and "Thelonious"), and the classic rock-radio staple "Freeway Jam."
Personnel: Jeff Beck (guitar); Max Middleton (keyboards); Phil Chenn (bass); Richard Bailey (drums, percussion).

Imaginary Voyage CD
by Jean-Luc Ponty
Our Price: $5.95 CD / $8.91 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
As of 1976, Jean-Luc Ponty's variations on the Mahavishnu Orchestra theme were still fresh and imaginative, cast in a
distinctively different, more lyrical, more controlled framework. For Imaginary Voyage, Ponty's instrumental lineup
is identical to that of Mahavishnu -- electric violin, guitar, keyboards, bass, drums -- but he turns the emphasis on
its head, with all commands coming directly from the violin (his) and less competitive crossplay emanating from his
colleagues. For starters, "New Country" is a lively jazz-rock hoedown, one of those periodic C&W side trips that
some fusioneers attempted for a lark, and "The Gardens of Babylon" is a wonderfully memorable tune, the beginnings
of which grow out of "New Country." The last half of the CD is taken up by the title composition, a strong four-part
suite that hangs together with barely a sag in interest over its 20-minute span. ~ Richard S. Ginell
Recorded at Kendun Studios, Burbank, California in July and August, 1976.
Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (electric & acoustic violins, organ, synthesizers); Daryl Stuermer (electric & acoustic guitars);
Allan Zavod (keyboards, piano); Tom Fowler (electric bass); Mark Craney (percussion).

Returns CD
by Return To Forever
Our Price: $15.19 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The 2008 reunion of Return to Forever's classic mid-1970s line-up marked an extraordinary event for fans of progressive
jazz fusion. The band built their reputation on the mind-boggling chemistry of pianist Chick Corea, bassist Stanley Clarke,
drummer Lenny White, and guitarist Al Dimeola. That chemistry proves as explosive as ever 20 years after the group first
dazzled audiences with their complex, rock-influenced hybrids. The two-disc set RETURNS features live recordings from
Return to Forever's reunion tour, boasting such classics as "Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy" and "The Romantic Warrior."
There is, as one might guess, no shortage of stretching out from each of these four jazz luminaries.
Return to Forever: Al di Meola (guitars, acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Chick Corea (piano, keyboards, synthesizer);
Stanley Clarke (acoustic bass, upright bass, electric bass, bass guitar); Lenny White (drums, percussion).
Audio Mixers: Buck Snow; Bernie Kirsh.
JazzTimes (p.98) - "[T]his two-CD set delivers all the impossibly tight unisons, cascading streams of 64th notes and
virtuosic soloing that longtime RTF fans have come to expect from their heroes."

Cosmic Messenger CD
by Jean-Luc Ponty
Our Price: $8.39 CD / $7.59 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
COSMIC MESSENGER is certainly more "cosmic" than Ponty's previous releases, thanks to the violinist's more pronounced
use of synthesizer and the enlisting of Allan Zavod as his main keyboardist. The album finds Ponty exacting the energized
fundamentals of rock while simultaneously fleshing out his already expanding sound palette.
With exuberant, atmospheric violin etchings and exciting runs of drums and bass underpinning Zavod's guitar thrusts,
"Don't Let the World Pass You By" summarizes the Ponty songbook. Released at the end of the '70s and executed with
a sophisticated degree of polish and poise, COSMIC MESSENGER moves along with the inertia of a locomotive. The album
remains a sparkling gem in Ponty's crown.
Recorded at Cherokee Studios, Hollywood and Chateau Recorders, North Hollywood, California.
Personnel: Jean-Luc Ponty (acoustic & electric violins, organ, synthesizer); Allan Zavod (piano, electric piano, organ, synthesizer);
Peter Maunu (acoustic & electric guitars, synthesizer); Joaquin Lievano (acoustic & electric guitars); Ralphe Armstrong (electric bass);
Casey Scheuerell (drums, percussion).

Unorthodox Behaviour CD
by Brand X
Our Price: $9.25 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The music of Brand X borrows more from prog rock than jazz, although there's plenty of room for improvisation
within the group's extended arrangements. Collins drives the band mercilessly throughout tracks like the
opening firestorm "Nuclear Burn" and the rocking "Smacks of Euphoric Hysteria." John
Goodsall's guitar is the primary melodic element in most works, alternately snaking mesmerizing solo lines
and jumping around intricate off-kilter themes on the mysterious "Euthanasia Waltz" or the bizarre title track.
Bassist Percy Jones and keyboard player Robin Lumley add the most unusual colors; Lumley, with his myriad of
now-vintage keyboard sounds, and Jones with his signature fretless burps and glissandos.
UNORTHODOX BEHAVIOR is a fitting description of the oeuvre of the British instrumental group Brand X.
Featuring complex time signatures, adventurous arrangements, and experimental sounds, the group was England's
answer to the much-maligned American fusion genre. This incarnation of the band is best known for featuring
drummer Phil Collins of Genesis and later pop fame.
Brand X: John Goodsall, Percy Jones, Robin Lumley, Phil Collins.
