Rearviewmirror: Greatest Hits 1991-2003 CD
by Pearl Jam
Our Price: $10.39 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Unquestionably one of the biggest rock bands of the 1990s, Pearl Jam, in many ways, were
the star students of the grunge class. Though they didn't have the defiant, punk attitude
of Nirvana nor the we-love-Sabbath metal edge of Soundgarden, the quintet found a huge
audience for their relatively straightforward rock, thanks, in large part, to frontman
Eddie Vedder's intense persona and distinctive vocals. As the band grew to resent their
success, their music became intentionally less accessible (and often more intriguing),
and while their peers folded, Pearl Jam found themselves with a smaller, but still loyal,
fanbase by the first years of the 21st century.
Although this two-disc set draws from the first 12 years of Pearl Jam's history, its
focus is clearly on the group's heyday, with more than 20 of the 33 tracks dating
1991-'95. The collection is cleverly divided into an "up side" and a "down side."
The former features PJ's more rocked-out songs (the ominous "Once," the joyous "State
of Love and Trust," the scathing "Not for You"), while the latter presents the ensemble's
mellower tunes (the jangly "Daughter," the Eastern-tinged "Who Are You," the '50s ballad
"Last Kiss").
REARVIEWMIRROR
shines the spotlight on underrated songs (the fierce "I Got ID" and the
gorgeous "Off He Goes") and offers an excellent overview of this formidable band.

Dirt CD
by Alice In Chains
Our Price: $6.25 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Brutal and hard but exciting and surprisingly melodic, DIRT made Alice In Chains national stars in 1992 after
being around the Seattle alternative rock scene for many years. They produce a blindingly together sound, with
the bass of Mike Starr able to switch between following the bass drum beat and cloning Jerry Cantrell's guitar
note for note, albeit a few octaves lower. They have such polish that they are often reminiscent of the heyday
of Led Zeppelin. Lyrically they plow the familiar angst furrow with tracks such as 'Junkhead', 'Sickman' and '
God Smack'. Equally satisfying are 'Them Bones' and 'Rooster', which saw them start in a direction that led to Jar Of Flies two years later.
Alice In Chains: Layne Staley, Jerry Cantrell (vocals, guitar); Michael Starr (bass); Sean Kinney (drums).
Additional personnel: Tom Araya (background vocals).

Into The Wild Soundtrack CD
by Eddie Vedder
Our Price: $9.55 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The chiming, acoustic sound of "Hard Sun," the lead-off single from this collection of solo Eddie Vedder material, might
lead fans to wonder where the roaring guitars and grunge-drenched energy of Pearl Jam has gone. Yet the large-scale, anthemic
quality of the song, its forceful, three-chord progression, and Vedder's familiar gruff and soaring vocals reveal that the singer
hasn't strayed far from home turf.
INTO THE WILD, a soundtrack to the Sean Penn film of the same name, features 11 original tunes from Vedder that largely fit the
mold of "Hard Sun." The songs are acoustic, wistful, earnest and open-hearted, yet boast arrangements and a production style that
favors a grand sonic sweep over intimacy, the sound of unique personal dreams writ large (a perfect fit with the film's story,
which concerns a young man's hitch-hiking odyssey). Sleater-Kinney's Corin Tucker and blues harmonica veteran Charlie Musselwhite
join Vedder in creating the cinematic atmosphere, but its Vedder's voice that carries the show. Pearl Jam fans will find this
release a surprising, but satisfying, change of pace.
Q (Magazine) (p.124) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "The circling banjo of 'No Ceiling'
and 'The Wolf''s aptly feral howls evoke long days and cold nights in the wilderness..."

Black Gives Way To Blue CD
by Alice In Chains
Our Price: $14.45 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
When Layne Staley died from a drug overdose in 2002, it had already been several years since most Alice in Chains fans stopped hoping
for a new album. The singer had become a recluse since the late-`90s, and there was little indication that AIC would ever again produce
much in the way of new music. As a result, when the remaining members reunited to release BLACK GIVES WAY TO BLUE in 2009, expectations were low.
To the delight of all however, the album proved to be perhaps the Seattle combo's most energetic and consistent effort since its masterpiece
DIRT. Perhaps the most surprising element of the new record was how much it sounded exactly like Alice in Chains.
While new singer
William DuVall was not an exact Staley soundalike, he managed to evoke both the unique timbre and sense of deep angst that were the
late vocalist's trademarks. Throughout, the sound is heavier and sturdier than ever before, with songs like the first single
"A Looking In View" and "Check My Brain" borrowing a bit from the nu-metal bands Alice in Chains inspired, and beating the upstarts
at their own game.Spin (p.72) - "Alice in Chains still have an appealingly outcast aura on their first studio album in 14 years."
Billboard (p.84) - "The droning 'Private Hell' takes the listener into a trance-like state, while the album-closing title track
is a salute to Stanley that features Elton John on piano."
Q (Magazine) (p.116) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he quartet sound reborn, with new vocalist William DuVall's eerie melodies
perfectly complimenting Jerry Cantrell's lead-bottomed riffs. A stunning return." Hide Description

Strange Cousins From The West CD
by Clutch
Our Price: $11.59 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Whereas many bands start out with a basic sound and get progressively more experimental as they flex their creative muscles,
Clutch, over the course of 15 albums, stripped down its music to its bare, heavy essence, garnering an intensely loyal fan base in the process.
STRANGE COUSINS FROM THE WEST finds Clutch heavily steeped in `70s-style heavy blues rock, spitting out a heaping bong load of
chugging guitar/bass/drums/vocal jams refreshingly free from multi-tracked six-string overdubs and studio trickery.
Songs such
as the Mountain-seque "50,000 Unstoppable Watts" and the swampy, funky "Witchdoctor" represent a tight, rockin' band doing what
they do best with
Alternative Press (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "It's one of their strongest albums....STRANGE COUSINS is a righteous blend
of dirty, raw swamp-sludge blues and the band's patented brand of raucous riff-rock..."

Superunknown CD
by Soundgarden
Our Price: $10.65 CD / $7.59 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
As the first grunge band to be signed by a major label, Seattle's Soundgarden opened the pop floodgates,
and a deluge of thrash-o-rama bands began swamping the airwaves. Following a series of trend-setting releases on the independent
Sub Pop and SST labels, Soundgarden's initial A&M releases LOUDER THAN LOVE and BADMOTORFINGER signaled the return of the classic
guitar band to popular consciousness.
Using the time-honored Led Zeppelin/Aerosmith approach as a jump-off point--not to mention influential bands like Black Sabbath,
MC5, The Stooges and Killing Joke--Soundgarden has formalized their own approach to raw power. Their stylized melodic hooks,
however, along with their sometimes surreal lyrics, set them apart from the pack. Whether they get dazed and confused on the
vamping "Limo Wreck," or cut loose with a wham- bam-thank-you-ma'am 4/4 cruncher like "Kickstand," Soundgarden can rock and
roll with all the jet-propelled, no-nonsense crunch of all your favorite bands, from Zeppelin to the Ramones--and lead guitarist
Kim Thayil's chops never outrace his melodic imagination.
"Black Hole Sun" won the 1995 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance, and "Spoonman" won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance.
"Black Hole Sun" was also nominated for Best Rock Song, and SUPERUNKNOWN was nominated for Best Rock Album.

Songs The Lord Taught Us CD
by Cramps
Our Price: $8.15 CD /$10.89 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Digitally remastered by Mike Reese (A&M Studios, Hollywood, California).
An early (1980) effort by the simultaneously minimalist and over-the-top retro-shlockabilly kings, sympathetically produced by
their fellow devotee of Southern culture on the skids Alex Chilton. Poison Ivy's guitar work here is her usual mix of trashcan
chording and distorted surf riffs, and singer (?) Lux Interior is in particularly good faux-Elvis form on such instant classics
of self-aggrandizement as "The Mad Daddy" and "I'm Cramped." The band, as is their wont, also throws in some interesting covers
here, including the Rock and Roll Trio's "Tear It Up" and a version of '60s grunge pioneers the Sonics' "Strychnine" that's
so primitive it makes the original sound like Yes by comparison. In a word--wow.
The Cramps: Lux Interior (vocals); Ivy Rorschach, Bryan Gregory (guitar); Nick Knox (drums).
Additional personnel: Booker C (Alex Chilton) (organ).
Principally recorded at Sam Phillips Recording Studio, Memphis, Tennessee.
Alternative Press (11/01, p.104) - Included in AP's "10 Essential Goth Albums" - "...Rockabilly ghouls enhanced with an
encyclopedic love of B-movie Americana..."
Mojo (Publisher) (7/02, p.162) - "...An ultra-primitve classic..."
