Against The Law CD
by Stryper
Our Price: $8.49 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
A definite improvement over In God We Trust, the grittier Against the Law is not only a more consistently rockin' album,
it's also much more focused and inspired. The CD's standout track is an imaginative cover of Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star,"
which works surprisingly well in a metal/hard rock setting. Originals like "Rock the People," "Caught In the Middle," and "Ordinary Man"
aren't anything to be ashamed of, either. Because many of the songs don't have overtly Christian lyrics, there was some speculation that Stryper,
like Amy Grant, was going secular. But Stryper's members insisted that they were still very much a Christian band.
It's hard to imagine
Mötley Crüe, Ratt, or Warrant recording a song like "Not That Kind of Guy," which finds Michael Sweet turning down the chance to have casual
sex with an attractive woman because he doesn't consider it the moral thing to do. ~ Alex Henderson
Personnel: Michael Sweet (vocals, guitar, background vocals); Oz Fox (guitar, background vocals); Brent Jeffers
(keyboards, drums); John Purcell, John Purdell (keyboards); Robert Sweet (drums); Tom Werman (percussion); Tim Gaines, Jeff Scott
Soto (background vocals).

Awake CD
by Skillet
Our Price: $11.69 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
With a Grammy nomination and the sales figures to back it up, Skillet have merged as one of the most successful Christian rock
bands of the `00s. Their 2009 effort, AWAKE, is a return to the harder-edged rock sound of the band's 2006 album COMATOSE.
Melding raw, dissonant riffs with a soaring, anthemic builds and harmonizing, Skillet's passionate message is relayed in
progressive-tinged rock that, while faith-based, is not lacking one bit in its sheer visceral power.
The highest-charting Christian album on the Billboard charts since 2006, Awake could be tagged as Skillet's mainstream
breakthrough on that fact alone. Certainly, the band's monster modern rock does sound like it could slip onto on active
rock playlist -- maybe not quite in 2009, but earlier in the decade, when metallic rockers heavy on the guitar downstrokes,
and power ballads with chant-along vocals were relatively common. That's not to say that Skillet sounds out-of-step with the
times -- there's still a gleam to the Howard Benson production that sounds modern -- and they do mange to imprint their own
identity on this sometimes-generic brand of contemporary rock, thanks to their communal vocals, with male and female voices
trading off, and skyscraper hooks.
Skillet also don't always focus solely on religion, as many of their songs are grounded
in inspirational positivity, so that's another reason why Awake finds the band poised to break into the mainstream. ~

More Than 50 Most Loved Hymns CD
by Compilations
Our Price: $14.29 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
In an era when the definition of religious music has expanded to include everything from Christian death-metal to gospel
rap, it's nice to know one can still find an album of traditional prayerful tunes. MORE THAN 50 MOST LOVED HYMNS collects
popular church songs performed in a sweeping orchestral/choral style that will evoke warm memories of the grand holiday
cathedral services of yesteryear.
Perhaps inspired by the sounds of angels on high, the music here is majestic in a vintage MGM film-score manner, complete
with huge string sections, tinkling harp, and vocals soaring to the heavens. Highlights include the Celtic-tinged "This Is
My Father's World," which features an Irish pennywhistle, and a particularly exuberant version of "Joyful, Joyful We Adore
Thee," which promises to uplift even the most spiritually bereft.
The perfect soundtrack to a devout Easter or Christmas
celebration, MORE THAN 50 MOST LOVED HYMNS is equally good for the ears and the soul.

Soldiers Under Command CD
by Stryper
Our Price: $8.49 CD / $9.90 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
While The Yellow and Black Attack! earned Stryper a fair amount of publicity, it was Soldiers Under Command that put
the band on the map commercially. The album went gold, and Stryper became a major hit on MTV without abandoning its
Christian message. Glossy yet intense pop-metal like "The Rock That Makes Me Roll" and "Surrender" definitely promotes
Christianity, but does so without condemning non-Christians or pointing the finger at other religions. Ironically,
one of lead singer Michael Sweet's influences is Rob Halford of Judas Priest -- although Stryper and the Priest have
little in common lyrically. Like The Yellow and Black Attack!,
Soldiers Under Command is decent when it comes to up
-tempo songs, but weak when it comes to ballads. "First Love" and "Together as One" demonstrate that all too often,
Stryper's ballads were much too sugary for their own good. ~ Alex Henderson

Mountain High... Valley Low CD
by Yolanda Adams
Our Price: $5.95 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
MOUNTAIN HIGH...VALLEY LOW won the 2000 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album.
Yolanda Adams is too beautiful and talented to have escaped the bickerings of some narrow-minded people within the gospel
community. She has been criticized in the past both for her manner of dress (more glamorous than seductive) and for her
"secular" music (which focuses on faith-driven lyrics while branching out into R&B and pop styles). With the release of
Mountain High. . .Valley Low, her first album on a major, mainstream record label, it would seem that she has provided her
attackers with their most potent ammunition ever.
The album has been heavily promoted by Elektra Records, and has world-class producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis,
and Keith Thomas stretching Adams' musical boundaries further than ever. While at times they take her in strange
directions (the hip-hop flavor on "Time to Change" sounds like a lost track from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill),
each song, taken independently, works. The album is incredibly varied and makes use of a full grab-bag of effects,
from heavy over-dubbing (on some tracks Adams is singing up to three layers of vocals at the same time, while backup
vocalists add even more textures) to swelling pop-orchestra string lines to funky electronic effects.
The bottom line, though, for critics and fans alike, is the message. Before they crank up their pitching arms
the stone throwers should take note: this is an incredibly inspirational album in which every song focuses on
spreading the message of Jesus. Adams just gets to have a lot of fun along the way. In a time when most gospel
albums don't make a dent in music sales outside of the Christian community, an artist with Adams' kind of appeal
is a blessing, not a curse. ~ Stacia Proefrock

Reborn CD
by Stryper
Our Price: $11.39 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Much has changed since the yellow and black attacked TV screens via Dial-MTV during hair metal's golden era. Grunge, punk-pop,
electronica, rap-metal, and countless other styles have had their seasons in the sun, and a new Stryper video on TRL would be
as laughable as another Ross Perot run for president.
Bound and determined to shatter the notion that they were merely another
hair metal band whose members decided to dress like bees and use "the Lord" merely as a marketing gimmick (and a reason to pelt
their audience with Bibles), Stryper reassembled in 2003 for a brief tour, no doubt inspired by the slew of hip young bands
with Christian messages, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. This gave bandleader Michael Sweet the confidence to
round up the rest of the Strypers (minus original bassist Tim Gaines) and return to the studio. Reborn isn't so much a return
to form as it is an introduction to Stryper for a generation whose members may have been too young to experience the band
the first time around. The disc features 11 songs, and the group had the good sense not to bloat Reborn with unnecessary filler.
With their first album of all-original material since 1990's AGAINST THE LAW, Christian heavy metal band Stryper do
more than drum up their glory days on 2005's REBORN. The intervening 15 years did little to diminish Stryper's attack:
the band still thunders with both glitz and muscle, and lead singer Michael Sweet sounds as sharp as ever. Likewise,
Stryper's commitment to their faith hasn't wavered an iota, as the messages on songs like "Passion" and the title track
prove. In the midst of the many Christian metal bands inspired by Stryper's model, REBORN finds the fathers of the
genre reasserting their worth.

End Of Silence CD
by Red
Our Price: $9.89 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The debut album by alternative CCM act Red, END OF SILENCE blends impassioned but not preachy lyrics with heavy
alt-rock in a vein that's similar to nu-metal acts like Linkin Park and Evanescence. Singer Mike Barnes's better
than average voice and thoughtful lyrics are the band's strongest points, but the group provides a massive rock
wallop on tracks like "Breathe into Me" and Let Go."
Even though Red is technically a Christian-based alternative rock quintet, you wouldn't necessarily know this
detail by listening to their debut album, End of Silence. Polished and ready for secular rock radio, Red produce
fiercely passionate music influenced by contemporary bands like Linkin Park and Chevelle. Leaning closer to the
latter, Red is far from a rap-rock outfit. But their use of textured backdrops and heavy, crunching riffs clearly
brings to mind the atmosphere of many a Linkin Park song. For proof, look no further than the band's first single
"Breathe into Me," which layers thick guitars and fiery strings into a song that sounds like a less beat-oriented
"One Step Closer." Lead singer Mike Barnes doesn't have as expressive a voice as Chester Bennington
(how many really do?), but he does a remarkably good job loading each song with powerful emotion --
from passionate singing to distraught shrieking -- to make up for the slightly derivative tone of the overall record.
Red's addition of string sections and piano parts on most every song (and not just in delicate
tracks like "Pieces" and "Already Over, Pt. 2") gives a nice ethereal edge to the band's otherwise intense and
crashing rhythms. Altogether, End of Silence could just as easily storm the mainstream as take over the hearts of
its primary Christian audience. ~ Corey Apar
