Constellations CD
by August Burns Red
Our Price: $12.19 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
August Burns Red has made a name for itself by being open to experimentation within the metalcore genre, and on their
third album the Lancaster, Pennsylvania-based quintet continues to reach for new levels of technical prowess and musical
sophistication without losing their brutal attack and apocalyptic, Christian-themed lyrics.
August Burns Red have made a name for themselves by being open to experimentation within the metalcore genre, and on
its third album, the Lancaster, PA-based quintet continues to reach for new levels of technical prowess and musical
sophistication without losing its brutal attack and apocalyptic, Christian-themed lyrics. Guitarists J.B. Brubaker
and Brent Rambler combine stuttering machine-gun salvos and dizzying single-note runs and drummer Matt Greiner's
thrilling stop-start rhythms often build momentum to the point of ecstatic hysteria. Stand-out track "Ocean of Apathy"
employs layered rhythms that bring a subtle complexity to a deceptively simple and brutal song. Although some listeners
may resist the stark good-versus-evil, Jesus-conquers-Satan imagery, few metal fans would argue that, on only its
third go-round, an already mature band has taken another step forward. ~ Paula Carino
Alternative Press (p.106) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "This is fierce, punishing album loaded with muscular breakdowns,
screaming guitar leads...[and] double-bass-drum thunder..."

This Is My Blood CD
by Soul Embraced
Our Price: $9.05 CD / $7.59 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Born of two members from Living Sacrifice, the unholy trio of Soul Embraced embraces death metal's characteristic musical
angst with a Southern rock flavor. As expected, the group's standard fare of grindcore vocals, rapid-fire pentatonic guitar
blasts, and polyrhythmic drum figures is on demonic display. Yet this time out, Soul Embraced works within a familiar pop
song format that leaves plenty of room for melody and chord changes readily known to arena rockers.
The bridge of
"Angels With Raven Hearts" brazenly adapts a major key progression to the group's lethal canon. "Buried In" and
"The Cold Stares of Dead Eyes" are two cuts that tread modern rock radio waters by way of Chad Moore's crooning and
Rocky's guitar breaks, which neatly pick out a few blue notes à la Eric Clapton. "Scars Remain" opens with a motif
dangerously close to a clichéd air-guitar anthem from the 1980s.
The commercial slate is wiped clean as
soon as the first verse kicks up. In a genre that thrives on formula and repetition, Soul Embraced adds a welcome
blast of soul on This Is My Blood. ~ Tom Semioli

In God We Trust CD
by Stryper
Our Price: $8.49 CD / $9.90 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Unquestionably Stryper's strongest and most rockin' album, To Hell with the Devil was a tough act
to follow. Instead of following it up with something equally intense, the band stressed its pop side on In God We Trust.
Though not quite as big a seller as To Hell with the Devil, the album quickly went gold and fell short of platinum. In
God isn't a terrible album by any means, and it does have its moments (most notably, "Come to the Everlife" and
"The Writing's on the Wall"), but some of the other material isn't very memorable. Quite often, Stryper sounds
like just another MTV-friendly arena rock band. More devoted Stryper aficionados are the main listeners who should
acquire this album. ~ Alex Henderson

Soldiers Under Command CD
by Stryper
Our Price: $8.49 CD / $9.90 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
While The Yellow and Black Attack! earned Stryper a fair amount of publicity, it was Soldiers Under Command that put
the band on the map commercially. The album went gold, and Stryper became a major hit on MTV without abandoning its
Christian message. Glossy yet intense pop-metal like "The Rock That Makes Me Roll" and "Surrender" definitely promotes
Christianity, but does so without condemning non-Christians or pointing the finger at other religions. Ironically,
one of lead singer Michael Sweet's influences is Rob Halford of Judas Priest -- although Stryper and the Priest have
little in common lyrically. Like The Yellow and Black Attack!,
Soldiers Under Command is decent when it comes to up
-tempo songs, but weak when it comes to ballads. "First Love" and "Together as One" demonstrate that all too often,
Stryper's ballads were much too sugary for their own good. ~ Alex Henderson

Reborn CD
by Stryper
Our Price: $11.39 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
Much has changed since the yellow and black attacked TV screens via Dial-MTV during hair metal's golden era. Grunge, punk-pop,
electronica, rap-metal, and countless other styles have had their seasons in the sun, and a new Stryper video on TRL would be
as laughable as another Ross Perot run for president.
Bound and determined to shatter the notion that they were merely another
hair metal band whose members decided to dress like bees and use "the Lord" merely as a marketing gimmick (and a reason to pelt
their audience with Bibles), Stryper reassembled in 2003 for a brief tour, no doubt inspired by the slew of hip young bands
with Christian messages, and the response was overwhelmingly positive. This gave bandleader Michael Sweet the confidence to
round up the rest of the Strypers (minus original bassist Tim Gaines) and return to the studio. Reborn isn't so much a return
to form as it is an introduction to Stryper for a generation whose members may have been too young to experience the band
the first time around. The disc features 11 songs, and the group had the good sense not to bloat Reborn with unnecessary filler.
With their first album of all-original material since 1990's AGAINST THE LAW, Christian heavy metal band Stryper do
more than drum up their glory days on 2005's REBORN. The intervening 15 years did little to diminish Stryper's attack:
the band still thunders with both glitz and muscle, and lead singer Michael Sweet sounds as sharp as ever. Likewise,
Stryper's commitment to their faith hasn't wavered an iota, as the messages on songs like "Passion" and the title track
prove. In the midst of the many Christian metal bands inspired by Stryper's model, REBORN finds the fathers of the
genre reasserting their worth.

End Of Silence CD
by Red
Our Price: $9.89 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The debut album by alternative CCM act Red, END OF SILENCE blends impassioned but not preachy lyrics with heavy
alt-rock in a vein that's similar to nu-metal acts like Linkin Park and Evanescence. Singer Mike Barnes's better
than average voice and thoughtful lyrics are the band's strongest points, but the group provides a massive rock
wallop on tracks like "Breathe into Me" and Let Go."
Even though Red is technically a Christian-based alternative rock quintet, you wouldn't necessarily know this
detail by listening to their debut album, End of Silence. Polished and ready for secular rock radio, Red produce
fiercely passionate music influenced by contemporary bands like Linkin Park and Chevelle. Leaning closer to the
latter, Red is far from a rap-rock outfit. But their use of textured backdrops and heavy, crunching riffs clearly
brings to mind the atmosphere of many a Linkin Park song. For proof, look no further than the band's first single
"Breathe into Me," which layers thick guitars and fiery strings into a song that sounds like a less beat-oriented
"One Step Closer." Lead singer Mike Barnes doesn't have as expressive a voice as Chester Bennington
(how many really do?), but he does a remarkably good job loading each song with powerful emotion --
from passionate singing to distraught shrieking -- to make up for the slightly derivative tone of the overall record.
Red's addition of string sections and piano parts on most every song (and not just in delicate
tracks like "Pieces" and "Already Over, Pt. 2") gives a nice ethereal edge to the band's otherwise intense and
crashing rhythms. Altogether, End of Silence could just as easily storm the mainstream as take over the hearts of
its primary Christian audience. ~ Corey Apar
