The fourth of four CD reissues taken from Art Pepper's three nights at the Village Vanguard in July 1977, as
with the other releases, adds one selection ("Scrapple from the Apple") to the music of the original LP;
all of the performances on this and the other sets have since been made available as part of a massive nine-CD
box set. The great altoist was clearly excited to be playing at the famous New York club, and his rhythm section
-- pianist George Cables, bassist George Mraz and drummer Elvin Jones -- consistently stimulates his imagination.
This release has more variety than usual, for in addition to his alto playing (including a memorable unaccompanied
solo on "Over the Rainbow"), Pepper switches to clarinet for the lengthy "More for Les" and interprets the ballad
"These Foolish Things" on tenor. The nine-CD set is essential for Art Pepper fanatics, but those just wanting a
taste of the great altoist's talents will be satisfied with this release. ~ Scott Yanow
Original soundtrack recording of the CBS television special recorded in 1965, tracks include 'O Tannenbaum',
'What Child Is This', 'My Little Drum', 'Linus and Lucy', 'Christmas Time Is Here' (instrumental), 'Christmas
Time Is Here' (vocal), ... Full Description'Skating', 'Hark, The Herald Angels Sing', 'Christmas Is Coming',
'Fur Elise', 'The Christmas Song' & 'Greensleeves'. Fantasy Records. 1988.

Peter, Paul & Mommy CD
by Peter, Paul, and Mary
Our Price: $13.39 CD / $9.99 MP3

This particular reissue gets a lower audio rating because of a general music mix that comes across as far too busy
between the usual guitars (picked with folky enthusiasm), the vocal arrangements (often with children incorporated),
and the addition of not only acoustic bass (heard before on the group's albums), but banjo,
autoharp, hammer dulcimer, etc. The tape hiss is more evident on this album, too.
Peter, Paul and Mary had the
essential appeal of seeming like a family -- Peter Yarrow and Noel Paul Stookey looked as though they could have
been brothers, and it really wasn't a stretch to see Mary as their sister. It's this picture that informs Peter,
Paul and Mommy, an album of songs for children (as played by people accommodating to adults) and prevents it from
becoming a lump of sugar. As a result you get Tom Paxton's "The Marvelous Toy" with its charming imagery, Yarrow's
"Day Is Done," a melancholy paean to the truth of passing the flame to a new generation, and the outright
goofiness of Shel Silverstein's "Boa Constrictor."
As a fillip you also get "Puff (The Magic Dragon)." While short at
35 minutes (it would have been nice to have as a two-fer) it's a charming, well-done album that's as delightful for
grown-ups as for kids -- and as vital for kids as it ever was. If you have children, you can sit with them and
enjoy this album. ~ Steven McDonald

Fantasia Soundtrack CD
by Soundtrack
Our Price: $9.65 CD

Leopold Strokowski's 1940 recordings with the Philadelphia Orchestra for the movie Fantasia were
landmarks on several counts. Apart from attempting to bring classical music
to the masses in the theater, the soundtrack album -- which came out on LP in the 1950s --
was one of the earliest stereo recordings, featuring some of the most enjoyable high-fidelity
sound of the period and boasting impeccable performances (even if the pieces were mostly re-
edited and shortened).
The recordings are also infinitely preferable to the
mid-'80s attempt to re-score Fantasia with a modern orchestra and modern sound -- not only
did the latter fall considerably short of what people expected, but the interpretations were
flaccid and dull by comparison with the originals.
Performed by The Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Leopold Stokowski.
Recording information: 1940.

Los Lobos Goes Disney CD
by Los Lobos
Our Price: $14.84 CD / $9.99 MP3
Usually ships in 1-2 days
For their second children's album (following 2005's PAPA'S DREAM, made with Lalo Guerrero), Los Lobos pay
tribute to the Walt Disney movie musicals, as others have done before them. This version of the Disney
songbook falls in between Barbara Cook's traditional pop treatment on THE DISNEY ALBUM and producer Hal
Willner's more imaginative, revisionist take of some of the material, STAY AWAKE. (Los Lobos appeared
on the latter, performing "I Wan'na Be Like You," a song repeated here.) Put simply, LOS LOBOS GOES DISNEY
could have been called "Disney goes Los Lobos" instead, since the group applies its familiar mixture of
musical styles to Disney songs. At first, that seems more radical than it turns out to be over the course
of the disc, as the band launches into a spirited version of "Heigh-Ho" sung in Spanish.
Los Lobos were having fun on this record, as they should have been. The interpretations are hardly
definitive, but they are enjoyable and demonstrate the range and adaptability of the music written
for Disney movies over the years.

Lullaby CD
by Jewel
Our Price: $7.59 CD
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Though marketed as a children's album in conjunction with toy maker Fisher Price, LULLABIES could more accurately
be described as a children-themed, adult-directed singer-songwriter album. Composed largely of gentle, lyrically
direct, folky originals with a few standards thrown in ("Somewhere Over the Rainbow," "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star"),
the album most recalls Jewel's multi-platinum debut PIECES OF YOU. For longtime followers of the Alaska native's
frequent genre-jumping, this comes as a welcome development--Jewel always shone brightest when equipped with a simple
song and a sparse arrangement. Here her soothing singing wraps the listener like a warm blanket, making LULLABIES a
perfect bedtime record for weary heads of all ages.
To her credit, Jewel never panders to kids, never creates something sickly sweet or cutesy,
she merely delivers a collection of lullabies intended to relax and soothe. She succeeds so well in that regard
that none of the individual songs stand out, they all blend together in a sweet, sometimes haughty sigh,
something that will ease plenty of children into slumber.

Cars Soundtrack CD
by Soundtrackl
Our Price: $15.65 CD

This is an Enhanced CD, which contains both regular audio tracks and multimedia computer files.
For the soundtrack to Pixar's charming computer-animated movie CARS, the company once again enlisted its go-to composer, Randy Newman,
though this time around the veteran singer-songwriter sticks solely to a vibrant instrumental score (as opposed to his pop songs for
TOY STORY, MONSTERS INC., etc.).
The soundtrack also ties in the film's NASCAR motif with country songs like Rascal Flatts' version of "Life Is a Highway,"
which sounds like a slightly twangier take on Tom Cochrane's smash hit, and Brad Paisley's "Behind the Clouds," a sweet,
affable, traditional country song that is one of Cars' highlights. Newman's score, meanwhile, follows in the tradition of
his Toy Story and A Bug's Life work, translating his witty musical style into orchestral pieces that are rooted in traditional
film music but never sound stuffy. "Opening Race" alternates between brass fanfares and revved-up guitar riffs, while the
thrilling strings on "McQueen's Lost" and "Dirt Is Different" suggest curving roads and wide-open landscapes. And as always,
the whimsical love theme "McQueen and Sally" and self-explanatory "Goodbye" show that Newman is still capable of being
sentimental without being schmaltzy. Even though a soundtrack that consisted entirely of Newman's pieces and songs would
be more in keeping with Pixar tradition, Cars does a good job of balancing its pop and score elements. ~ Heather Phares
Other artists featured on the album include Sheryl Crow (the revved-up "Real Gone") and Brad Paisley
(the twangy, relaxed "Behind the Clouds" and "Find Yourself"), along with Chuck Berry and John Mayer, who each offer up a different
take on the cruising classic "Route 66."
