Emperors Of Soul CD
by The Temptations
Our Price: $47.09
Usually ships in 1-2 days
The Temptations became one of the most successful singles groups of the '60s--ever, actually--by making hearstopping,
doo-wop influenced soul ballads and emotionally raw dance music, but also by adapting to the times. In their earliest
incarnation, David Ruffin's scratchy soul voice (as heard in "Ain't Too Proud To Beg"), Eddie Kendricks' high creamy croon
("My Girl") and some of Smokey Robinson's best songs (he was their first producer) gave the Temptations appeal to both hardcore rhythm and blues and mainstream pop audiences. When Ruffin and then Kendricks left, the band, now under the auspices of writer-producer Norman Whitfield, soldiered on and, with new lead singer Dennis Edwards, made some of the most funky and socially conscious--and still marvelously commercial--singles of the late '60s and early '70s, including "Ball Of Confusion" and "Papa Was A Rolling Stone."
Because they were almost strictly a singles group, their career was loaded with album tracks and B-sides--some of which would have made ace singles themselves--which history has left on the relics pile and which huge box sets like EMPERORS OF SOUL were created to rescue. The Motown-meets-Stax tune "You've Got To Earn It," which was stuck on the B-side of "Since I Lost My Baby," is about as fine a throwaway as you can bury in such a location; "No More Water In The Well" features a deep-soul vocal by Ruffin that resonates with all the rhythm and blues that came before. There are later treasures too, including such minor '70s singles as "Take A Look Around," a cinematically-orchestrated Norman Whitfield-Barrett Strong ballad about the drug-ravaged inner city. Not surprisingly, that one still resonates, too.
Recorded between 1959 and 1994. Includes liner notes by Harry Weinger and Nelson George.
Digitally remastered by Joseph P. Palmaccio (PolyGram Studios).

Songbook CD
by Gordon Lightfoot
Our Price: $44.29
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Although the Canadian-bred Gordon Lightfoot is a virtual deity in his homeland, he has not achieved the icon status of Dylan, Neil Young, or even Paul Simon on American soil. Lightfoot has been a prolific and consistent songwriter and performer since the '60s, and his work has been covered endlessly. "If You Could Read My Mind" alone has spawned 100 different versions! Yet Lightfoot remains more a secret hero than a household name.
Rhino's 4-disc box sums up an estimable career in a deluxe package replete with chestnut favorites, rarities, and seldom-heard early efforts. Folk purists will be overjoyed with Disc 1, where Lightfoot is basically unaccompanied. The spare "Early Mornin' Rain" and "Bitter Green" are arguably more effective than their over-produced '70s counterparts. It is the '70s material included on Discs 2 and 3, however, that put Lightfoot on the map on both sides of the border. With "Sundown" and "Carefree Highway," he assumed a laid back perfection. Why he wasn't able to carry that commercial success through the ensuing decades has more to do with a fickle market and the onslaught of technology than it does with any serious decline in his art.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.
Recorded between 1962 and 1996. Includes liner notes by Gordon Lightfoot, Nicholas Jennings and Thane Tierney.

Sinatra: New York CD
by Frank Sinatra
Our Price: $57.80
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Without argument, Frank Sinatra is the most iconic American singer of the 20th century. This whopping five-disc set
issued by Reprise attempts to define Sinatra by performing in the place that seemingly defined him. It contains 61 never-before-issued performances of the singer in concert appearances in New York from the mid-'50s through to 1990. It also includes a DVD of a performance at Carnegie Hall, taped in 1980 with 16 more performances, for a total of 77 tracks. Disc One features radio broadcasts. Its first four cuts are taken from his appearance at the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra's 20th anniversary gig, broadcast from Manhattan Center in 1955. The selections are all ballads, with the capper being "This Love of Mine." Disc Two is comprised of an excellent performance at Carnegie Hall, with Bill Miller conducting the orchestra, and Sinatra's great quartet. This is where we get performances of "My Way," "Send in the Clowns," and "Bad Bad Leroy Brown." Disc Three also comes from 1974; recorded at Madison Square Garden, it contains the same core band but also includes Woody Herman & the Thundering Herd. The final CD showcases two excerpts from concerts at Carnegie Hall in 1984, and from Radio City Music Hall in 1990. Interestingly, in the final show, the orchestra is conducted by Frank Sinatra, Jr.. Finally, the DVD is a complete 1980 show from Carnegie Hall, Sinatra's voice still in fine shape and electrifying. The concert looks and sounds like a career retrospective -- from the '50s on, anyway -- but in place of the ubiquitous "My Way," we get the closing theme "New York, New York."
Liner Note Authors: Twyla Tharp; Yogi Berra; Nat Hentoff; Tom Young; Tony Bennett; Martin Scorsese.

Sonic Boom CD
by Kiss
Our Price: $16.09
Usually ships in 1-2 days
When SONIC BOOM was released, it had been over a decade since the last Kiss studio album, so expectations were understandably high.
In addition, the intervening period had seen the band fire two of its founding members for the second time, only to replace them with sidemen wearing Ace Frehley and Peter Criss's iconic makeup. Luckily, the new additions, unlike some of Kiss's "un-masked years" members, have a good feel for classic Kiss. That fact, matched with Paul Stanley's assumption of production duties, makes SONIC BOOM one of the most consistent and thoroughly Kiss-sounding albums since the group's `70s heyday. That said, the New York City unit manages to branch out a bit; alongside very ROCK & ROLL OVER/LOVE GUN-esque tracks such as the Gene Simmons-sung rockers "Yes I Know (Nobody's Perfect)" and "Russian Roulette," sit ambitious pieces such as "Stand," which employs a Motown-influenced chorus melody, sophisticated arrangement, and Beach Boys-style harmonies, and "All For the Glory" and "Lightning Strikes," which are vocal showcases from new guys Eric Singer and Tommy Thayer (respectively). Interestingly, both Singer's rasp and Thayer's slightly off-kilter delivery are highly reminiscent of their famous predecessors, which further contributes to the album's distinct Kiss-ness. Overall, though the record doesn't pack quite the same lean, mean, gritty punch as early classics like DESTROYER or KISS (or Ace Frehley's own 2009 album ANOMALY), it is a clear return to the sound of archetypal Kiss.
Audio Mixer: Greg Collins.

Red CD - Import
by King Crimson
Our Price: $22.55
Usually ships in 1-2 days
After the transitional ISLANDS, LARK'S TONGUES began the third Crimson phase that ended with RED. The quartet of David Cross, John Wetton,
Robert Fripp and Bill Bruford (augmented on LARK'S TONGUES by madman percussionist Jamie Muir) is regarded as the most innovative of Crimson's many lineups, offering hard-edged improvisations on an unprecedented level. With founding member/lyricist Pete Sinfield departed, Robert Palmer-James stepped in with a more cutting, concise lyrical approach that matched the group's uncompromising instrumental precision.
Cross was relegated to guest status on RED, but still makes his presence felt, as do returning Crimson vets Mel Collins and Ian McDonald on saxes. The ominous, hard-edged aspect of Crimson's sound has always been alleged as an influence on early heavy metal, and RED, their heaviest, makes it clear why. The Wagnerian tendencies of early Crimson are magnified here, but the airy-fairy "prog-rock" trappings are discarded in favor of a sound that melds hard rock, modern classical music and jazzy improvisation. The resultant fusion-oriented sound is like a darker, rockier cousin to Tony Williams' Lifetime or the Mahavishnu Orchestra (or the repeating riff cycle that ends the Beatles' "She's So Heavy."
