Somethin' Else: The Fine Lookin' Hits Of Eddie Cochran CD
      by Eddie Cochran
    Our Price: $14.95
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Subtitled THE FINE-LOOKIN' HITS OF EDDIE COCHRAN, this 20-track compilation is probably the best of the many Eddie Cochran compilations out there. Assembled with Razor and Tie's usual care and wit, SOMETHIN' ELSE delves fully into the tragically brief career of this rockabilly pioneer. Cochran is sometimes overlooked by rock historians, but on the basis of three classic singles alone--the title track, "Twenty Flight Rock" and the immortal "Summertime Blues"--he deserves to be near the top of any halfway-serious list of '50s icons.

The other 17 tracks will be a revelation to anyone who knows only the hits, though. From his rare early single "Tired and Sleepy," as one-half of the Cochran Brothers (although he and Hank Cochran were not related), to the gems which came out after his death in a car accident in London, these songs are stripped-down rockabilly--with a heavy and largely unremarked-upon jump blues influence--at its finest.
Includes liner notes by Colin Escott.

      Buddy Holly Collection CD
      by Buddy Holly
    Our Price: $26.35
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Few artists have exercised such a profound influence in such a short space of time. Holly's untimely death robbed pop of a performer adept as a solo act and as leader of his group, the Crickets. He wrote, or co-wrote, most of his own material at a time when many singers relied on outside material, and his sparse, but effective, guitar style proved highly influential, particularly on British beat groups. The Buddy Holly Story abounds with songs now indisputably pop classics and confirms Holly's status as a major figure. The Beatles, Tex-Mex music and the singer-songwriter genre each owe Holly a debt, which is itself a lasting tribute to the quality of his work.
Digitally remastered by Erick Labson (MCA Media Studios, North Hollywood, California).

31 R&B Classics That Rocked The Jukebox In 1958 CD - Import
      by Blowing The Fuse
    Our Price: $25.75
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
While the 1958 volume in the Bear Family label's Blowing the Fuse series may not have as many utterly well-known hits, that doesn't mean it's not every bit a treasure trove of fine music. Far from it, and it does have its share; Chuck Berry's "Johnny B. Goode," Johnny Otis' "Willie and the Hand Jive," Jackie Wilson's "Lonely Teardrops," Fats Domino's "Whole Lotta Loving," the Monotones' "Book of Love," and Bobby Freeman's' "Do You Wanna Dance" all qualify in this category, as does Little Richard's "Good Golly Miss Molly." But there are other smoking cuts such as Roy Hamilton's rock & roll and R&B hybrid "Don't Let Go," the early soul of Sam Cooke's early solo effort "I'll Come Running Back to You," and Little Willie John's "Talk to Me, Talk to Me." But the side opens with the inimitable wail of the Hollywood Flames' "Buzz, Buzz, Buzz," which is early rock & roll as it engaged doo wop. And then there's the scorching original version of "Rockin' Robin" by Bobby Day. In other words, it's about as necessary as a record of early rock & roll and R&B can be. Get it. ~ Thom Jurek
The "BlowingThe Fuse" series imaginatively compiles R&B tracks in splendid sound & detail, assembled by Canadian collector & DJ Dave "Daddy Cool" Booth and knowledgeably annotated by Hank Williams-biographer Colin Escottare. The music comes from the dawn of the Post-War R&B era in 1945 and continues through to 1960! Other labels lift photos from old books & magazines and commission quickie liner notes that tell you little or nothing and often get it wrong. This series has detailed song-by-song notes, stories behind the songs and incredible never-before-seen photos in huge booklets so big they won't fit inside a standard jewelbox.

Cameo Parkway: The Greatest Hits CD
      by Parkway and Cameo
    Our Price: $10.25
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Parkway and Cameo were two Philly-based labels which, in the late 1950s and early '60s, released some of the finest rock-and-roll and r&b of the era. Sadly, the labels tanked in the mid-'60s, and most of the material never saw the light of day again. However in 2005, ABKCO Records began the major project of re-releasing the best of Cameo-Parkway's huge artist roster.
This hits package gathers the best of the best. Classic early-rock numbers like Chubby Checker's "Let's Twist Again," Dee Dee Sharp's "Mashed Potato Time," and ? & the Mysterians' "96 Tears" are highlights, but 22 other dance-happy tracks round out the picture and provide a nice sampling of the upbeat Cameo-Parkway sound.

Blowing The Fuse: 30 R&B Classics That Rocked The Jukebox In 1956 CD
      by Blowing The Fuse
    Our Price: $9.09
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Germany's Bear Family label has created an amazing series in their Blowing the Fuse project. Each volume features chart and jukebox sellers of all stripes of R&B, soul, and early rock & roll. From the looks of things, 1956 was a wild and woolly year with Bo Diddley ("Pretty Thing"), Chuck Berry ("Roll Over Beethoven"), and Little Richard ("Rip It Up" and "Long Tall Sally") all making this set. But it's not all rock & roll. Clyde McPhatter's "The Great Pretender" is here, as are Ray Charles' "I'll Drown in My Tears" and Howlin' Wolf's "Smokestack Lightnin'," just to name a few more. Also in the register are James Brown's early soul with "Please, Please, Please" and Big Joe Turner's proto-rock & roll/R&B hybrid "Boogie Woogie Country Girl," and there are two items that cannot be forgotten, the Cadillacs' amazing "Speedoo" and Little Willie John's classic of classics, "Fever." Add in fine sound (no "reprocessed for stereo" crap here), fine liner notes, and a handsome package. Along with the rest of the series, this is a must-own. Simply put, these are the best year-by-year compilations out there. ~ Thom Jurek
This series has detailed song-by-song notes, stories behind the songs and incredible never-before-seen photos in huge booklets so big they won't fit inside a standard jewelbox. Each comes in a specially designed DigiPac. These are true, properly thought-out compilations in the spirit of Guy Stevens, Paul Oliver, Mike Leadbitter and the others who compiled groundbreaking blues/R&B LPs back in the 1960s and 1970s.

Very Best Of Jackie Wilson CD
      by Jackie Wilson
    Our Price: $8.79
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
A fine alternative to Rhino's compilation of the same name, British label Ace's THE VERY BEST OF JACKIE WILSON is true to its title, from the swinging, post-doo wop exuberance of 1957's "Reet Petite (The Finest Girl You Ever Want to Meet)" to the orchestrated deep soul of 1971's "Love is Funny That Way." All of Wilson's best-known cuts are here, including the string-sweetened ballad "Night," the driving, dance floor summons "Baby Workout," and Wilson's excellent 1967 version of Gary Jackson's "Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher and Higher."

Here too, of course, is Wilson's signature song "Lonely Teardrops," an impassioned, yearning slice of pop perfection (ironically, Wilson suffered a heart attack while performing the song on Dick Clark's Oldies show in 1975). Wilson's particular skill was blending an R&B edge with pop accessibility, and his supple, soaring tenor was well suited to ballads, mid-tempo shuffles, and sweaty, high-octane rave-ups alike. At 24 tracks, Ace's compilation gives fine samples of each, and differs from the Rhino set only in its inclusion of more cuts from Wilson's later career. It makes a convincing case for Wilson as one of the most dynamic, talented, and memorable performers of the era.
24 sides incl. Reet Petite 1957-70 now with a reduced price

      Rock Instrumental Classics, Vol. 1:
      by The Fifties CD
    Our Price: $9.49
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
Rhino begins yet another concept line with 18 tasty instrumentals from the rock era. It's the first of a five-volume set devoted to this genre, and they certainly picked the right era to launch it. From Duane Eddy's shuddering guitar riffs and Link Wray's rumbling licks to Lee Allen's honking sax lines and bleating phrases, Dave "Baby" Cortez's distorted organ, and Ernie Fields' swing/boogie, this anthology shows how early rock & roll emerged through the union of seemingly disparate musical elements. Besides big-band jazz and shouting blues, there were also bits of rockabilly, pop, novelty tunes, and country, reworked and presented in short, captivating ditties. ~ Ron Wynn
Includes liner notes by Cub Koda.
Compilation producers: Gary Stewart, James Austin, David McLees.

      Best Of The Flamingos CD
      by The Flamingos
    Our Price: $9.09
    Usually ships in 1-2 days
The Best of the Flamingos is an 18-track collection that compiles all of the Flamingos' biggest hits and best songs. Best Of ignores the group's latter-day soul hits and concentrates solely on their doo wop material, which makes for a stronger, more cohesive collection. "I Only Have Eyes for You" is the acknowledged classic, while "I'll Be Home" and "A Kiss from Your Lips" were hits in their own right, but the compilation proves that the Flamingos were one of the greatest doo wop groups with their lesser known numbers like "The Vow" and "The Ladder of Love." ~ Stephen Thomas ErlewineGoldmine - 5 Stars
