Sonatas and Meditations
by Jeremy Kurtz

Double bassist Jeremy Kurtz presents two new works for double bass and piano, paired with a French baroque sonata, in this beautiful new recording made in a partnership project with Houston's KUHF.
"Sonata for Double Bass and Piano" by composer (and Louisiana Philharmonic principal bassist) David Anderson starts the disc. The three movement work includes lyrical writing, syncopated rhythmic \"groove\" sections, and even a handful of direct Shostakovich quotes (which the dedicated listener may notice.)
"The eagerly awaited first CD from principal bassist of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, Jeremy Kurtz, is a fascinating and colorful recording." -Bass World

Surprised by Beauty: Minimalism in Choral Music
by Boston Secession
Our Price: $18.00 CD / $18.00 MP3 Album Download
Usually ships in 1-2 days
Minimalism: an important modern compositional technique that exploits simple repeating patterns to create rich vocal textures. This recording features significant choral masterworks: William Duckworth’s Southern Harmony [1981], a choral work based on 19th century shape-note hymns, Arvo Pärt’s The Beatitudes [1990] and Gavin Bryars’s And so ended Kant’s travelling in this world [1997]. Also featured is the premier of “Transport,” a movement from Secession’s composer-in-residence Ruth Lomon’s oratorio-in-progress, Testimony of Witnesses.
Jane Ring Frank & Boston Secession explore the hidden depth and profound beauty of minimalism through works by Arvo Part, Gavin Bryars, Ruth Lomon, and William Duckworth.

Powerhouse Pianists
by American Modern Ensemble
Our Price: $12.97 CD / $9.99 MP3 Album Download
Usually ships in 1-2 days
An eclectic program... McMillen offers a rarity right off the bat, with Chester Biscardi's softly glittering Piano Sonata, then completely changes direction with Lee Hyla s stark Basic Training and Eric Moe s Where Branched Thoughts Murmur in the Wind, a brief, delicate essay. He ends with Brooklyn, October 5, 1941, Annie Gosfield's striking tribute to the Brooklyn Dodgers (played with baseballs and a mitt), in an unusual set delivered with tautness and finesse. Gosling begins with George Tsontakis s enigmatic Bagatelle, which at one point hovers over some very Brahmsian chords, followed by the darkly mysterious Episodes for Piano by Perry Townsend. Then Conlon Nancarrow bubbles into the mix with Tango?, brimming with wit. The cascade of notes continues with Joan Tower's Or Like a... an Engine, its stammering title from a John Ashbery poem, and Gosling really floors the gas pedal for E-Machines, a hyperactive jolt by David Rakowski. Finally comes Five Études for Piano by Mischa Zupko, clearly influenced by Ligeti, and Gosling gives them a scientific accuracy, as if surveying their intricacies with a microscope. Engineer John Yannelli, capturing both pianists in the hall at Sarah Lawrence College, has given these dynamic artists a clear soundstage against which even the minutest details register in sharp focus.
Formed in 2005, the American Modern Ensemble celebrates the finest contemporary music by American composers. Powerhouse Pianists, AME's first recording on the AMR label, highlights two of its members, pianists Blair McMillen and Stephen Gosling.

I am no longer of this world
by Don Krim, countertenor||Suzanne Bradbury, Piano
Our Price: $12.97 CD / $9.99 MP3 Album Download
Usually ships in 1-2 days
COUNTERTENOR DON KRIM does not fit the expectations we have of a modern countertenor. His voice is neither reminiscent of a choir boy nor of a mezzo-soprano. The coloration, emotionality and use of dynamic range, the naturalness and immediacy of the sound are simply unique in the countertenor sphere, recalling in many ways the magnificent, late Lorraine Hunt Lieberson.
Venturing out of the traditional countertenor repertoire for a Debut CD is unprecedented. This is the first recording of Ru¨ckert Lieder by a countertenor, and this is the first recording of the Rilke Songs since the grammy award-winning
premiere recording by Ms. Hunt Lieberson in 2006.
A different kind of Countertenor. Debut CD featuring Gustav Mahler's Ruckert Lieder and the Rilke Songs by Peter Lieberson, in homage to Lorraine Hunt Lieberson. Recommended if you like Lorraine Hunt Lieberson, Dawn Upshaw, David Daniels, countertenors.
