The Hammond B3 is at the core of the funky soul-jazz grooves that provide a vehicle for stylistically uncompromised improvisation. While saxophonist Daryl Lowery's playing is noticeably rooted in the music of John Coltrane and the "post-Coltrane influenced" school the highly original sound of Instant!Groove featuring Yoron Israel (drums), Rick Peckham (guitar), Ron Mahdi (acoustic bass), and Dennis Montgomery, III (B3), is reminiscent of the organ based groups of John Scofield and draws much of its repertoire from the likes of "Big" John Patton, Ruben Wilson, Don Patterson and Leon Spencer.

A lucky seven of the selections here are originals by Crain. Van Heusen's But Beautiful is thus the best known. Crain's tunes are truly but beautiful as well. Crain's tender treatment of the Van Heusen standard is held in responsive and caring hands. Burtschi's bass underscores the poignancy of such oscillations and vibrations and Olson's brushes are lilting accents to Crain's touch. All in all it's an aromatic collection of tunes arranged and packaged by master florists in the greenhouse of jazz.

The early 80's was the ignition and spark for Nathaniel Killins IV a.k.a. Naquil (Na-keel). The infectious sounds of Kraftwerk, Arthur Baker and Soulsonic Force implanted electronic seeds that would sprout artistic,idealistic branches in a young teenage mind.From that initial exposure Naquil started street dancing (waving,popping,locking,funkateering,breakdancing)which soon aroused his curiosity of the electronic music from what he danced to. THE RENEGADES: Paul Mutzabaugh (keyboards), Matt Ross (guitars), Frank Alongi (drums), and Jon Wegge (basses) -- are all very active in the Chicago music scene. They have all performed and recorded in many genres including: jazz, pop, country, blues/rock, gospel, etc. This wide range of proficiency allows for The Renegades to tackle their fairly complicated and musically demanding repetoire of original music. Formerly a more "straight ahead" jazz group, The Renegades' 2004 release, "Doppler Olympics", is the first record that represents their current progressive fusion sound.
The Renegades are a Chicago-based fusion band, in the style of Tribal Tech, Return to Forever, and Allan Holdsworth. "Doppler Olympics" contains all original material (progressive, modern, jazz-fusion) by keyboardist Paul Mutzabaugh & guitarist Matt Ross.
