 | DISOWNING KALEB: hollowbody
Sometimes it seems that Christian rock groups, even though they tend to tackle impressively sincere and important topics, are a bit timid when it comes to channeling the passion that comes with creating effective rock music. The artists that are holding back could learn a few things from this group, an ambitious trio that incorporates key elements of popular modern rock while adding a tastefully executed spiritual angle that is neither all-encompassing nor overwrought. Sticking with the tried and true guitar/bass/drums platform, they are able to gleam an amazing variety of sound from the structure, constantly pushing forward with assistance from some fine production work. The lyricism and songwriting never undermine the listener, making this an easily accessible album for fans of Christian rock who are looking for a more sincere, honest, and edgy approach to the form. |

 | MAKEDA: the return
While neo soul and contemporary gospel would seem to blend together easily enough, it's rare that we see an artist approach the fusing of the forms with the precision and delicacy of this one. These 14 tracks have been constructed with care and spiritual devotion, as is evident from the first lines that she whisper/speaks on the percussion heavy intro: "This is the return, back to our first love." It's this couplet that sets the mood and tempo for what follows- a group of songs that effortlessly flow in and out of each other, wisely touching on grand and spiritual topics but not laying all the cards on the table. By enabling this approach, she allows the feel of the album to remain openly accessible and interesting. Along these same lines, her songwriting is groove oriented and features empathetic lyricism, but is by no means simple. Finding a balance in the layers of harmony and instrumentation in songs like these is deceivingly difficult, but it's in these areas that she perhaps shines the brightest. |

 | RICHARD WALTON: vessel
Sometimes the best Christian music ends up being the work that is most accessible, the comfortable musings of someone who is successful in their craft because they know how to reach out to people without any off-putting pretension. The 11 tracks here are a prime example: A group of songs that are easy to listen to but never overly simple, giving the listener credit and allowing for some leeway to peel back the layers. While the songwriting approach is fairly straightforward, the underlying rhythm and melodic elements are key in the essence of the sound, lending bits and pieces that add a level of importance to the whole. The lyrics are the same, fitting perfectly with the music and not occupying too much space in the whole scheme. The result is a collective balance and confidence that comes through structurally and creatively in these songs, posing ideas to the listener by maintaining an environment that is warm and welcoming. |

 | DAVID NORTH AND THE GOSPEL CELEBRATION: i am not ashamed
While many gospel artists are content to put their own spin on traditional and contemporary standards, there are still those who push forward and use their faith as an inspiration in composing their own original songs of praise. The songs that make up the whole of this album are certainly that: Distinct, smooth pop songs that preach an all encompassing tolerance for humanity and individuals. The eight member group share vocal duties and are clearly comfortable singing upbeat choral numbers as well as slower, more reflective ballads. The message here is unconditional love and understanding, which is exemplified perfectly in the title track: "I am who I am, I am what I am/ It doesn't matter how, it doesn't matter why/ There is no one to blame." They also dedicate the album to "Our Christian gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered sisters and brothers, and all who love unconditionally." It's rare to hear such honesty and understanding in a record like this, and it makes for a very unique hour of music. |

 | LADIE SMITH: this is my war cry
Spiritual R&B and hip hop is no longer a new thing, although it is constantly gaining momentum and continuing to be an effective alternative for fans of gospel and urban music alike. Using this blending of styles to the utmost, this young artist speaks and sings with a confidence and maturity that is rarely seen from someone still in their teens. With help from some of her equally adept and talented friends, she blazes through an array of hip hop and R&B worship songs, reaching deep down for melodies and hooks that are catchy yet solid. With some straight rap verses thrown in between, the songs achieve a variety and feel that is a must in this genre of music, while simultaneously proving that this is a legitimate endeavor, true songwriting from some ambitious musicians who are more than versed in the art of crafting a song. While some of this is certainly aimed at the teenage sect, these songs will appeal to anyone looking to expand their horizons when it comes to spiritual music. |
