  •  The Independent Musicians CD Reviews

Welcome to the EvO:R Independent CD Reviews Section.
I would like to take a few minutes to introduce ourselves to everyone. The EvO:R review section features reviews from various independent musicians that submit material for our consideration.

I wanted to let you know a little about our review teams collective thoughts on music. It's important to let the people that we review know how we think of their music and how we listened to their creations.

First of all, we strongly believe that if your music stinks then the world should know about it! After all, you have the nerve to charge as much for your stuff as the majors do so it better be pretty damn good. If your material is good, we'll be glad to tell the world. I We will hold nothing back! That is a promise.

     Only Human -
    by The Guy

Combining elements for Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jeff Beck, Joe Satriani, and Robin Ford just to name a few Christopher Schreiner aka the Guy is one of the finest 21st Century guitarists to come our way. I have listened to this CD for a couple months (which is not normal for a reviewer) and have been very inspired musically by Schreiner. His phrasing is stunning and the content of his song writting is first class.

My only disappointment with this release was the fact that this CD was a little too laid back for me. Schreiner has the chops but he leaves most of them on the table as he puts the music before the flash. When he does turn up the gas his chops are out of this world. Schreiners playing would be like dealing with a shy 3rd degree black belt in karotee . You just never think a mild mannered person could turn on a switch and pull your heart out with his hands.

The guitar sound is clean and crystal clear in the mix. The tone is never watered down by multiple effects. In fact, his sound is almost to stripped. Very much like SRV who cranked up his amp to near clipping levels and backed off the volume with his guitar volume control so he could seamlessly go from ultra clean to full metal jacket and never used a single pedel to get the job done. A look inside the sleeve of this CD shows Schreiners pedal board and he does have a nice collection of various pedals but his sound is not laidened with effects and processing.

I have been more and more impressed with the sound quality of independent music lately. Many CD's that I get are rivaling (if not exceeding) the major label counter-parts.It goes to show what can be done with a modest budget and dedication to a craft.

If you enjoy a good guitar player (like I do) this CD will come highly recommended. I just hope the next CD 'the Guy' lets his hair down and just makes a balls to the walls guitar masterpiece.

    Samples from the CD:

    /Intro /Icarus /An Interlude In Bleu /Zebra Club /Youngblood/
    /Syeeda's Song Flute /Her Hypnotic Heart /Something Beautiful/
    Conclusion:
As a guitar player and a studio musician I listened to Christopher Schreiner with a great deal of intensity. He has all the tools to be a rising force in the instrumental guitar community. The only question I have about Chris is if he wants to be associated in such an elite group of people or is he content with what he has done to this point.

I'm waiting for the day that I can go to my mail box and get my copy off Guitar Player Magazine and see this talented musician featured on the cover.
